SINGAPORE, Feb 6 - A 6.8 magnitude earthquake, at a depth at 29 miles, struck off the Philippines on Monday, northeast of Dumaguete, Negros island, at 0349 GMT, the US Geological Survey reported. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said that based on all available data a Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected. The death toll climbed to 60 on Tuesday, and at least 73 people were still missing. Monday's 6.9-magnitude earthquake also collapsed bridges and damaged roads on Negros Island, forcing soldiers and firefighters to hike mountains to reach remote villages. Most of the confirmed deaths were in Planas village, a part of Guihulngan town where some 30 houses were buried under concrete debris. Guihulngan Mayor Ernesto Reyes said crews were using backhoes to try to rescue people, but he added that at the rate deaths were being reported, the town may run out of coffins.

The death toll has climbed to 15, with more than 70 people missing. The 6.9-magnitude earthquake on Monday also collapsed bridges and damaged roads on Negros island. Soldiers and firefighters had to hike into mountains to reach remote villages. Most of the confirmed deaths were in Planas village, a part of Guihulngan town where about 30 houses were flattened. The Guihulngan mayor, Ernesto Reyes, said crews were using earthmoving equipment in the search for casualties. The damage may be worse than officials first realised because the quake cut off communications to some villages, Reyes said. "We have no water and power because electric posts were toppled," he said. "Many of our roads were damaged, including bridges, and stores are closed. We're isolated."

Breaking News-A magnitude 6.7 earthquake hit the central Philippine island of Negros, The death toll from the maganitude 6. 7 earthquake that jolted the central Philippine province of Negros Oriental on Monday rose to 52, local officials said Tuesday. At least 29 people were killed in a quake-triggered landslide in the village of Planas in Guihulngan City, mayor Ernesto Reyes said. Reyes said 10 others died due to a landslide on the Guihulngan national road. A nine-year-old girl was killed when a wall collapsed in nearby Tayasan township while 12 other fatalities were listed by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. Roel Degamo, governor of Negros Oriental, said the earthquake had damaged eight bridges, three of which were no longer passable.

In the mountain village of Plain, 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the coastal village of Guihulngan, in the province of Negros Oriental, some 30 houses were buried with about 40 residents trapped in them, said the governor Roel Degamo. "His situation is bad because if it is buried by a landslide for one hour, two hours, how can you breathe?" Said Mayor Ernesto Reyes. "However, we hope to continue to live." Soldiers of the army and police units were dispatched to assist in rescue efforts. At least 10 people were killed in Guihulngan, including university students, an elementary school and others in a village market that collapsed, said Reyes. Another 100 people were injured. The quake, which struck at 11:49 am (0349 GMT), caused another Solongon slip in the village of La Libertad, in the province of Negros Oriental.
