MapQuest is an American free online web mapping service owned by AOL.[1] The company was founded in 1967 as Cartographic Services, a division of R.R. Donnelley & Sons in Chicago, Illinois, United States. It moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1969. When it became an independent company in 1994, it was renamed GeoSystems Global Corporation. MapQuest was acquired in 2000 by America Online, Inc. Company headquarters are in Lancaster and Denver, Colorado.[2]

Donnelley began making maps with computers in the mid-1980s to generate maps for customers. Much of that code was adapted for use on the Internet to create the MapQuest web service in 1996. In 1999 the company was renamed to MapQuest to leverage the popularity of its online brand.
MapQuest was acquired in 2000 by America Online, Inc.
For a while, MapQuest included satellite images through a licensing deal with GlobeXplorer, but later removed them due to the unorthodox business mechanics of the arrangement brokered by AOL. In September 2006, the website once again began serving satellite imagery in a new beta program.
In 2004, MapQuest, uLocate, Research in Motion and Nextel launched MapQuest Find Me, a buddy-finder service that works on GPS-enabled mobile phones. MapQuest Find Me lets users automatically find their location, access maps and directions and locate nearby points of interest including airports, hotels, restaurants, banks and ATMs. Users also have the ability to set up alerts to be notified when network members arrive or depart from a designated area. In 2005 the service became available on Sprint and in 2006, Boost Mobile.
In July 2006, MapQuest created a beta version of a new feature in which users could now "Build Your Route" by adding additional stops, reorder one's route (and the stops along the way), to avoid any turns or roads en route.
In April 2007, MapQuest announced a partnership with General Motors' OnStar that will allow OnStar subscribers to plan their driving routes on MapQuest.com and send their destination right to OnStar's turn-by-turn navigation service. The OnStar Web Destination Entry pilot program began in the summer of 2007 with a select group of OnStar subscribers.
In July 2010, MapQuest announced[3][4] plans to become the first major mapping site to embrace open-source mapping, launching a new site[5] entirely using data from the OpenStreetMap project.
MapQuest provides some extent of street-level detail and/or driving directions for a variety of countries. You can see if they include your country from a pull down menu on their home page.
A MapQuest-branded Yellow Pages service is provided by AOL. Other services include a world atlas and MapQuest Mobile. MapQuest Mobile is a service providing maps and driving directions to any Web-enabled mobile phone or personal digital assistant.
MapQuest also features a customizable GasPrices page, where users can type their address and compare the gas prices of nearby public gas stations. Because it also features the dates that the prices were first posted, it allows users to find the cheapest prices for gas. However, this page is only available in the United States.
In October 2006, MapQuest sold off its publishing division (which published traditional maps in paper format) to concentrate on its online and mobile services.
On July 14, 2010, MapQuest launched a simplified user interface and made the site more compact. MapQuest also introduced "My Maps" personalization, which enables the user to personalize the interface.

MapQuest integration with OnStar means users can sign in to MapQuest, map a point of interest and send it straight to their car. Also, I have to confirm with Kelly and Damien, but they are probably going to stay at the la Qunita Inn off of M53 and Van Dyke. That is where they stayed last time. It has a pool and is a very nice hotel for anyone who needs to stay in this area. I can check into a group rate if anyone wants to let me know they are coming. Dad was telling me he is staying with Aunt Elaine, in Kalamazoo for the most part. I only have a couch. Mike might have a bed or two and a couple of couches. Donald Phinney: Last night was the 1st time I took the goldwing out at night. rode from Marble,Wa to Elk, Wa ( http://mapq.st/MxRJy9 ). Was a nice night the smell of pine, cut grass and flowers in bloom was even stronger at night. much of the way was next to a river with cliffs next to me down very curvy roads. I also found out that it is important to wax the plasic windscreen and polish it well before night driving as on coming lights make it hard to see pot holes and such in the road. the combination of high adrenaline from fear of crashing, beautiful scenery, and blasting worship music from the stereo gives new meaning to "A Wing and a Prayer" as I was praying fervently driving a goldwing on dark country roads. although I may not feel as close to Jesus as I did then, I think next time I will make certain I have the windshield properly rain-x ed before I do this again. When I stopped for gas and energy drink in Loon lake I got to meet a few men hanging out and drinking, and after coming over to admire my bike they began to feel conviction. The presence of God was on me heavy after all the fervent prayer. One man repented on the spot and 2 others began to seriously re-think their walk with The Lord. God is faithful and perhaps this was all used to remind me to pray more fervently. Oh and Daniel Scalf got to marble ok but still needs major work on his transmission or a new minivan the one he is driving has about 230,000 miles on it and a transmission that is going out.

Ginger Peppard: I am truly in a craptastic mood this morning. Went to bed at midnight after spending an evening with some of the rudest people I've met...got woken up by my roommate coming in at 2:30am then texting in bed for another 20 mins. Woke up at 4am to get to the airport, the hotel 'accidentally' charged me double for my room, which had already been deducted from my account because I use a debit card, which means its likely that they actually have charges me 3 times and I've had $1600 taken from my account (at a min it's about $1100 instead of $550), and the credit will take 3-5 days to post. The freeway was closed in both directions where I needed to get on and mapquest drove me in circles getting to the right exit. Finally made it to the airport and there is no coffee at all on this side of security...but there is a Starbucks so close on the other side of security that I can smell it. I guess at least I didn't miss my flight!
