Open worlds were traded for linear corridors and combat was altered to become more fast paced with control over only one character. Some fans embraced the change and others revolted. The announcement that the next installment would be a direct sequel kept people on edge, since the story and overall interest in the characters was not nearly as huge as previous sequels. XIII-2 does address many issues with the previous installment, but takes one step forward and two steps back. Journey Through Time Final Fantasy XIII-2 picks up three years after the previous game's ending; Cocoon's collision with Grand Pulse was prevented by Vanille and Fang, the heroes are freed from being l'Cie, and Orphan has been defeated. Everything seems normal, except for the absence of Lightning. Only her sister Serah seems to notice her disappearance, while others claimed that she died in preventing Cocoon's collision. It is only with the appearance of Noel, that it is revealed that Lightning is alive and he can take her to where she is doing battle with a mysterious new enemy. The two set off through time and space to set things right. There is an option to view a quick summary of the previous events of FFXIII, but the sheer scope of characters and terms is a lot to absorb in a limited time. Tight, responsive controls. Intense, traditional and new school soundtrack. Freedom and choice is back. Combat is fast paced and improved from FFXIII Monster catching concept is a welcome addition. Good voice acting. Several endings with nice replay value. Clean menu system. Cons: Weak story line. Some lame script choices. Sometimes a bit over dramatic. Only 2 human characters. Main characters are unable to use several staple Final Fantasy spells. ---------- OVERALL ---------- Final Fantasy XIII was the first Final Fantasy game to take away freedom and choice and in return, offer a strong and compelling story. FFXIII-2 as a sequel, fails to deliver the same level of a story and the majority of your good times with this game will be from the fast combat and freedom of choice. FFXIII-2 improves on all other aspects though, and is the first Final Fantasy game built to cater to the fans response to a previous game. Everything about this game is an improvement over it's predecessor, but the story line did not receive the same love and attention which hinders the final score. My game of choice for this momentous occasion is the newly released Final Fantasy XIII-2! I'm a big fan of Western and Eastern RPGs and whenever a new Final Fantasy game comes out, I just gotta try it! When FFXIII came out, many were disappointed in the linear direction of the game and lack of sidequests. Combine this weakness with other mishaps, and Squareenix was starting to make their fans question "Does squeenix know how to make a good rpg anymore?" Though I cannot say for sure if they've moved into a better direction with this new installment yet, many have already praised XIII-2 as being a great step forward in the right direction, at least as far as this style of FF game goes. Final Fantasy XIII-2 starts off great in this video with incredible cutscenes that you can interact in to help draw you into the story and the action to come!
