College career

Rivers committed to Duke University on September 30, 2010, over Kansas and UNC.[11] His commitment was widely covered by ESPN and various other sports networks given his status as the Class of 2011's top recruit.

As a freshman, Rivers played in Duke's exhibition games in China and Dubai during an international tour in August, 2011. In the first game against the China men's national basketball team, Rivers scored 18 points on 8-15 shooting and led Duke to an 77-64 victory. In the second game (also against the Chinese National Team), Rivers scored 12 points in a 78-66 victory, making several rim-shattering dunks during the first half. In the final game played in Beijing, China, Rivers chipped in 11 points as Duke topped the Chinese, 93-78. [1]. In his team's 86-66 victory over the Dubai National Team, he scored 16 points, including 10 in the second quarter, on an array of impressive drives.

At Duke's annual Midnight Madness event, Countdown to Craziness, Rivers had 14 points and 5 rebounds in 24 minutes to lead the White team in the inter-squad scrimmage.

On February 8, 2012, his 3-point basket as time expired allowed Duke to overcome an 82-72 deficit with 2 minutes to play in an 85-84 victory over the University of North Carolina. The victory ended North Carolina's 31 game winning streak at the Dean Smith Center.[12]

NBA career

On March 26, 2012. Duke announced that Rivers was leaving the school to enter the NBA draft.

Rivers wrote on Twitter: "I just want to thank all the fans that have supported me this year. it was so fun playing there and becoming a part of the Duke family! … I appreciate everybody, and the support y’all have given me! Duke nation has truly made me a better person and player! Duke #1"

Rivers said that he would love to play for his father's team, the Celtics, if they were to select him. [13]

Personal life

Rivers is the son of Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers.[14][15] His older brother, Jeremiah played basketball for Georgetown before transferring to play for Indiana, while his older sister Callie played volleyball for the University of Florida and currently plays professionally in Puerto Rico. His favorite team is the Boston Celtics.[12]

Austin Rivers Traveling in UNC Dook Game (HQ)

Austin Rivers Traveling in UNC Dook Game (HQ)

Compilation of Rivers' travels during the UNC Dook game. These are normal speed plays followed by a half speed replay of the same play. None of these were called, which is amazing because every time there's a ref not 10 feet away, watching him intently. "That move is why I was the No. 1 recruit in the country. Stop calling a travel." - actual quote from Austin Rivers. (In a Greater NC Pro-Am summer league game a ref called him twice for travelling. This was his response - leading to a technical). Since someone called into question what "move" the quote was referencing, here it is straight from the source: www.charlotteobserver.com

Oluka Ikenna Henry

Oluka Ikenna Henry:  Bundu Shooting: ECOWAS Court Rejects FG, Rivers’ Attempts To Block Request To Call Victims To Testify Posted: May 16, 2012 - 16:02 Augustine Onwe (pictured centre), Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, 20 October 2009, was shot twice in 2009-Phot: Amnesty In By Adetokunbo Mumuni The ECOWAS Court of Justice sitting in Abuja has rejected the arguments by both the Federal Government and the Rivers State Government to block application seeking court’s permission to call victims and witnesses to testify over the ‘shooting and killing by security agents in Bundu waterfront, Port Harcourt. The ECOWAS Court gave the order yesterday to allow the application for victims and witnesses to testify in the case after hearing arguments from counsel to the governments, and Socio- Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and ten other plaintiffs. Earlier SERAP and ten indigenes of Bundu waterfront and neighbouring communities in Rivers State had filed an application pursuant to Article 43 of the Rules of the ECOWAS Court requesting the court’s permission to call victims and witnesses to testify in the case. But the Federal Government and Rivers State Government objected, arguing that the plaintiffs’ application did “not contain detailed specific information on what each victims and witnesses would say in court.” In response, the plaintiffs through their counsel Adetokunbo Mumuni leading Sola Egbeyinka said that the requirements of Article 43 had been fully met. They also argued that the governments’ arguments had “no basis as it has not been supported by any counter- affidavit to our application.” The governments also argued that there was no detailed description of the victims and witnesses and their addresses but the plaintiffs countered by saying that they already filed papers in court justifying that the addresses of the victims and witnesses would not be provided to protect their safety and security. The governments also argued that the plaintiffs did not sign an Amnesty International’s amicus brief which had earlier been submitted to the court but the plaintiffs countered that “it is no business of the plaintiffs to sign such document since we do not own the document and it was not filed by us.” The ECOWAS Court after deliberations in chambers for over 45 minutes rejected the arguments by both the Federal Government and the Rivers State government on the grounds that “non-disclosure of addresses for the victims and witnesses does not affect the substance of the application and the interest of justice. The case is now adjourned to 12 and 13 June 2012 for hearing of testimonies of victims and witnesses. It would be recalled that SERAP and Israel Okari; Joy Williams; Austin Onwe; Tamno Tonye Ama; Victor Opium; Mark Bomowe; Napoleon Tokubiye; Napoleon Tokubiye; Jonathan Bokoko; Williams Tamuno; and Linus John dragged the governments to the court in 2010. The Suit Number ECW/CCJ/ APP/10/10 dated 29 October 2010, was filed on behalf of the Plaintiffs by Mr Femi Falana. The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation; Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi; Commissioner for Justice Rivers State; and the Commissioner for Urban Development, were joined as Defendants. In the suit, the Plaintiffs said that, “the Rivers State government with the support or complicity of the Federal government is planning large-scale demolitions of the city’s waterfront settlements. There are more than 40 waterfront settlements in Port Harcourt and they are some of the most densely populated areas of the city, home to at least 200,000 people.” According to the Plaintiffs, “The planned large-scale demotions were developed without adequate consultation with affected communities. Njemanze waterfront, a community close to Bundu Ama, was demolished in August 2009 and it is estimated between 13,800 and 19,000 people were forcibly evicted from their homes. Thousands of people, including children, women and the elderly were left homeless and vulnerable to other human rights violations.” “Also, on the morning of 12 October 2009, government authorities, accompanied by security agents wearing: regular army camouflage uniforms and camouflage head gear; camouflage uniforms and red berets; Mobile Police uniforms, Mobile Police uniforms and ‘RSVG’ flack jackets, Police uniforms and ‘S.O.S./Swift Ops. Squad’ flack jackets, and plain clothes agents wearing ‘JTF’ flack jackets’ – went to Bundu waterfront community to conduct an enumeration and assess the value of building structures earmarked for demolition,” the Plaintiffs added. “On 12 October a crowd gathered at the entrance to the community, next to the city’s prison, to protest against the enumeration and the proposed demolitions. The protest was peaceful. At around 8.30am, two Mobile Police (MOPOL) armoured personnel carriers approached the entrance of the community and parked next to the prison. At 9am a convoy of approximately 10 police and army vehicles approached the prison junction. A small armoured vehicle leading the convey drove into the crowd,” the Plaintiffs also said. The Plaintiffs also said that, “Without any warning, the soldiers started shooting. They first fired shots in the air and they drove their vehicles to the end of the road. Members of the community who were leading the protest told people not to run because, at the time, they believed that the government would not shoot to kill. The soldiers started shooting again but this time, they fired shots into the crowd.” “The protesters tried to run away but they were chased and fired upon by the security agents, who fanned out through the community. Apart from those who were shot in their homes, most people were shot from behind as they ran. As people ran away, members of the security forces followed them into the waterfront, shooting as they went,” the Plaintiffs added. The Plaintiffs are asking the ECOWAS Court of Justice for the following reliefs: 1. A DECLARATION that the indiscriminate shooting by the Defendants and/or their agents individually or collectively on 12 October 2009 into a crowd of unarmed protesters in Bundu waterfront community to conduct an enumeration and assess the value of building structures earmarked for demolition is unlawful as it is disproportionate and cannot be justified under any circumstances, and therefore constitutes a violation of Nigeria’s international human rights obligations and commitments to ensure the right to protest and demonstrate, guaranteed under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. 2. A DECLARATION that the indiscriminate shooting by the Defendants and/or their agents individually or collectively on 12 October 2009 into a crowd of unarmed protesters in Bundu waterfront community, and the resulting injuries and killing of the inhabitants of Bundu waterfront community, is unlawful as it violates the right to life, and to the security; dignity of the human person, and the right to health, guaranteed under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. 3. A DECLARATION that the indiscriminate shooting by the Defendants and/or their agents individually or collectively on 12 October 2009 into a crowd of unarmed protesters in Bundu waterfront community is unlawful as it resulted in violence, harassment, assault, killing, and other serious human rights violations against the inhabitants of the Bundu waterfront community, therefore constituting a serious breach of Nigeria’s human rights obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. 4. A DECLARATION that the failure of the Defendants and/or their agents individually and/or collectively to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the indiscriminate shooting (and the resulting killing and injuries) on 12 October 2009 into a crowd of unarmed protesters in Bundu waterfront community is unlawful as it breaches the international obligations and commitments of the Defendants to provide an effective remedy to victims of human rights violations, as recognized by the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. 5. AN ORDER directing the Defendants and/or their agents individually and/or collectively to pay adequate monetary compensation of $100 million (US Dollar) to the 2nd to 11th Plaintiffs for the violation of their human rights the subject matter of this suit, and to provide other form of reparation, which may take the form of restitution, satisfaction or guarantees of non-repetition, and other forms of reparation that the Honourable Court may deem fit to grant. 6. AN ORDER OF INJUNCTION restraining the Defendants and/ or their agents individually and/ or collectively from implementing any plan to carry out any enumeration in preparation for demolition of structures and properties in the Bundu waterfront community because the implementation of the plan without conforming to the requirements under international human rights law would lead to further violation of the internationally guaranteed human rights of the Plaintiffs and other inhabitants of the Bundu waterfront community. 7. AN ORDER directing the Defendants and/or their agents individually and/or collectively to promote, respect, secure, fulfil and ensure the rights of the 2nd to 11th Plaintiffs and other inhabitants of the Bundu waterfront community who suffered serious human rights violations on 12th October 2009.

Brutus Mascot

Brutus Mascot:  Duke will get a chance to avenge a lopsided loss to Ohio State as the Blue Devils host the Buckeyes in an ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Wed., Nov. 28, at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. Aaron Craft vs. Duke Ohio State took an 85-63 win over Duke in a Challenge match-up on Nov. 29 at Value City Arena. That game matched up No. 2-ranked Ohio State with No. 3 Duke in arguably the biggest nonconference game in the 14-year history of VCA. Exact game times for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge will be set at a later date, but the OSU-Duke match-up is almost certain to air in a prime spot on ESPN. Duke has four starters back from a 27-7 team that fizzled down the stretch with three losses in its last four games. The capper was a 75-70 loss to 15th-seeded Lehigh in an NCAA second-round tournament game – in Greensboro, N.C., no less. That was certainly an early exit for a Duke program just two years removed from its latest national title under Mike Krzyzewski. Guard Austin Rivers is leaving Durham after one year for the NBA. But 6-10 Mason Plumlee (11.1 ppg, 9.2 rpg) will be back for his senior year. Also returning are guard Seth Curry (13.2 ppg), forward Ryan Kelly (11.8 ppg) and guards Andre Dawkins (8.4 ppg), Quinn Cook and Tyler Thornton. Duke also adds shooting guard Rasheed Sulaimon (ranked 11th nationally). Ohio State has three starters back from its 31-8 team that won a share of the Big Ten title and reached the Final Four. The Buckeyes lost guard William Buford to graduation and saw center Jared Sullinger leave early for the NBA. Wing Deshaun Thomas (15.9 ppg) announced he would be back. Thomas averaged just under 20 points per game in OSU’s Final Four run and could be poised for a big year. Guards Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith Jr. also return. OSU coach Thad Matta will ask sophs-to-be Sam Thompson, LaQuinton Ross, Shannon Scott and 6-11 Amir Williams to step up and fill the voids. Sullinger led Ohio State with 21 points and eight rebounds in the win over Duke, while Buford added 20 points, five rebounds and four assists. Thomas had 18 points, connecting on 8 of 12 shots from the floor. Craft chipped in 17 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Craft was 7 of 11 from the floor, including 3 of 4 on threes. As a team, the Buckeyes were 59.3 percent from the floor (35 of 59) and connected on 57.1 percent of their threes (8 of 14). The Buckeyes led by as many as 24 points in the second half of that rout. Rivers led the way for Duke with 22 points, while Mason Plumlee had 16 points and eight rebounds. Duke came to Columbus six days after winning the Maui Invitational in Hawaii, where they took wins over Tennessee, Michigan and Kansas. “This was our seventh game in 13 days,” Krzyzewski said after the game. “We just got back from Maui. We weren’t able to get as juiced up as we needed going on the road. Even if we had done that, I’m not sure we beat them tonight. “Sometimes you just get your butt kicked … I’ve had my butt kicked before and we’ve kicked some butt. Tonight, my butt is sore,” he added with a chuckle. The loss was Duke’s worst loss by margin since a 77-54 loss to Villanova in the 2009 NCAA Sweet 16. It was the Blue Devils’ worst regular season loss since a 74-47 decision at Clemson earlier in that 2009 season. Also Notable * Did you know: ESPN’s telecast of Ohio State’s 85-63 victory over Duke last year was the highest-rated and most-viewed Challenge game ever, averaging a 2.6 rating and 2,618,000 households. The telecast propelled ESPN to its most-viewed Challenge, averaging 1,555,000 households, based on a 1.6 rating. * In regards to Duke, the all-time series with the Blue Devils is tied at 3-3. This will be OSU’s first trip ever to Durham and Cameron Indoor Stadium. The teams have met twice before in Greensboro with Duke winning 83-82 on Dec. 29, 1966, and 91-76 in a 2002 ACC/Big Ten Challenge game. That 2002 loss spoiled a 35-point game by OSU guard Brent Darby. Ohio State hadn’t hosted the Blue Devils in Columbus since Dec. 30, 1964. No. 8 Duke won that game 94-89 in double overtime. One of OSU’s wins came over top-ranked Duke 90-84 in overtime at the ECAC Holiday Tournament in New York City in 1978. * Matta coached against Duke once previously. His 2003-04 Xavier team dropped a tough 66-63 decision to top-seeded Duke in the NCAA Atlanta Regional final that season. * OSU is 6-5 all-time in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge with four straight wins: At Miami (Fla.) in 2008 (73-68), Florida State in 2009 (77-64) and at Florida State in 2010 (58-44). OSU’s record is the best of all Big Ten teams in the history of the Challenge. Duke is 11-2 all-time in the Challenge. * The Big Ten will be going for a fourth straight Challenge victory. The ACC won it the first 10 seasons before the Big Ten won it the last three. * There have been very few details released on OSU’s schedule for 2012-13. This game against Duke joins a likely home game with Kansas. The Buckeyes visited Kansas for the first of two-year home-and-home last December. The Buckeyes lost that game 78-67 and also dropped a 64-62 heartbreaker to the Jayhawks in an NCAA national semifinal game in New Orleans. OSU will also participate in the two-day Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Conn. The Buckeyes will play Rhode Island at 5 p.m. on Nov. 17 and will play either Seton Hall or Washington at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 18. As part of that event, OSU also gets home games against Albany (Nov. 9) and Missouri-Kansas City (Nov. 23). These games represent six of OSU’s expected 13 nonconference games, leaving seven unnamed opponents to date. If the Big Ten schedule reverses back, the Buckeyes would face everybody in the conference home and away except for: Purdue and Penn State (only away) and Minnesota and Iowa (only at home). ESPN Release On Challenge Here is ESPN's press release on the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, with the match-ups listed below. The 14th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge Presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods on Nov. 27-28 will be highlighted by North Carolina at Indiana, Ohio State at Duke and North Carolina State at Michigan, six programs expected to be highly ranked entering the 2012-13 season. ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 12 games of the two-day event matching top college basketball programs playing for conference supremacy and the Commissioners Cup. All 12 games will also be available via WatchESPN, which delivers live access to ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3 on PCs, smartphones and tablets to fans who receive ESPN’s linear networks as part of their video subscription from Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks or Verizon FiOS TV. The 2012 Challenge involves nine teams ranked in an ESPN.com early preseason top 25, including five of the top nine: No. 1 Indiana, No. 5 Michigan, No. 6 NC State, No. 8 Ohio State and No. 9 Michigan State. The ACC won the first 10 Challenges while the Big Ten captured the Commissioner Cup for the third consecutive event, including an eight to four win advantage over the ACC last year. In the event of a 6-6 tie, the Commissioner’s Cup will remain with the conference that won the previous year. 2012 Challenge highlights: * Off a Ratings High: ESPN’s telecast of Ohio State’s 85-63 victory over Duke last year was the highest-rated and most-viewed Challenge game ever, averaging a 2.6 rating and 2,618,000 households. The telecast propelled ESPN to its most-viewed Challenge, averaging 1,555,000 households, based on a 1.6 rating. * One more Shot at the Dozen: Duke, which has won 11 of its 13 Challenge games, will host Ohio State in its quest for an event-record 12th victory. Duke lost to Ohio State last year and to Wisconsin in 2009. * First Challenge Matchups: Four of the telecasts will feature first-time Challenge matchups: Virginia at No. 22 Wisconsin, Maryland at Northwestern, No. 9 Michigan State at Miami and Georgia Tech at Illinois. * In addition to first-time Challenge games, several of the teams are infrequent opponents: Michigan State and Miami have never met; Northwestern and Maryland played one other time, a Northwestern victory in 1958; Virginia and Wisconsin split its two games, Virginia in 1975 and Wisconsin in 1999; and Illinois has defeated Georgia Tech in six of its seven games, including the last one in 2001. * Tourney Teams: Eleven teams between the two conferences played in the 2012 NCAA Tournament: Duke, Florida State, North Carolina, NC State and Virginia from the ACC, and Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue and Wisconsin from the Big Ten. * Following a First with a Rematch: Boston College and Penn State and Nebraska and Wake Forest will follow first-time Challenge meetings with a second consecutive showdown in the event. Boston College, which won its first five games, lost to Penn State last year, while Nebraska lost its Challenge debut to Wake Forest. * Threepeat: Five of the games will mark three-time Challenge matchups: North Carolina at Indiana (Indiana win in 2001 and North Carolina in 2004), NC State at Michigan (Michigan win in 2003 and NC State in 2006), Ohio State at Duke (Duke win in 2002 and Ohio State in 2011), Iowa at Virginia Tech (won by Virginia Tech in 2006 and 2009) and Purdue at Clemson (Purdue win in 2003 and Clemson in 2007). * Three and one more: Minnesota and Florida State will meet for the fourth time (Minnesota won in 2000 and Florida State in 2004 and 2007). 2012 ACC/Big Ten Challenge schedule (Times and networks are to be determined) Tue, Nov 27 No. 13 North Carolina at No. 1 Indiana No. 6 NC State at No. 5 Michigan No. 25 Minnesota at Florida State Maryland at Northwestern Iowa at Virginia Tech Nebraska at Wake Forest Wed, Nov 28 No. 8 Ohio State at No. 15 Duke Virginia at No. 22 Wisconsin No. 9 Michigan State at Miami Purdue at Clemson Georgia Tech at Illinois Boston College at Penn State
