On July 1, 2010, the National Archives at Kansas City will open Partisan Pieces: Quilts of Political and Patriotic Persuasion an exhibition which features 12 historical quilts from the 1840s - 1940s. The quilts are from a traveling exhibition, on loan from the International Quilt Study Center and Museum at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Partisan Pieces will be on display from July 1, 2010 to October 1, 2010. Partisan Pieces features 12 quilts made of pieced and appliquéd stars, flags, eagles, campaign ribbons, and flowers. The theme and focus is on the political and patriotic sentiments of the women who made them during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This exhibition is a sampling of the numerous ways women cast their vote, if not their ballot in the years before suffrage. Partisan Pieces breaks new ground in the search for women’s rights as a new government and a new nation were being created. Rather than reading between the lines you can read between the stitches to gain new insights into the minds and emotions of the founding mothers. Barbara Brackman is a free-lance writer who specializes in the history of quilts. She has published many books on the topic; her most recent being Flora Botanica: Quilts from the Spencer Museum of Art. In 2001-02, she curated an exhibition for the Kansas City Museum called Quilts: The Ties that Bind. Her book Making History: Quilts and Fabric 1890-1970 was recently named one of the fifteen Kansas Notable books for 2009 by the Kansas Center for the Book. The quilts in this exhibition were donated to the International Quilt Study Center from several collectors including: Linda Giesler Carlson and Dr. John V. Carlson; Sarah and Byron Dillow; Jonathan Holstein; and Ardis and Robert James. In addition quilts from the greater Kansas City community will be featured along with items from the Union Station/Kansas City Museum Collection. Spencer Region questions & answers
The first sentence of a National Geographic article entitled "Documentary Redraws Humans' Family Tree" reads thus: "By analyzing DNA from people in all regions of the world, geneticist Spencer Wells has concluded that all humans alive today are descended from a single man who lived in Africa around 60,000 years ago." Question: how could anyone be descended from him if he was single? ;p lol, note the ";p". I just found the article's wording to be amusing.
Answer: He obviously was a player.
Is self defense illegal in Britain?
http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Showbiz-News/Myleene-Klass-Knife-Warning-Marks-And-Spencer-Model-Warned-Over-Waving-Kitchen-Knife-At-Teenagers/Article/201001215518164?lpos=Showbiz_News_Carousel_Region_3&lid=ARTICLE_15518164_Myleene_Klass_Knife_Warning%3A_Marks_And_Spencer_Model_Warned_Over_Waving_Kitchen_Knife_At_Teenagers "The TV star and Marks & Spencer model was in her kitchen, with her daughter upstairs, when she spotted people peering into her window just after midnight on Friday. She grabbed a knife and banged the windows before they ran away. Hertfordshire Police officers warned Klass she should not have used a knife to scare off the teens because carrying an "offensive weapon" - even in her own home - was illegal. Klass told Sky News in a statement: "My family are totally fine and I thank the police for being so re-assuring and comforting. "However, I was left shocked and surprised to be told that a private individual in the privacy of their own home runs the risk of committing a criminal offence if, out of fear for their own safety and their loved ones, they grab something with which they could defend themselves if an intruder enters their home. "I totally respect British law - but surely everyone has the right to self-defence in their own home if they are in danger?" Her spokesman Jonathan Shalit said the former Hearsay singer was "utterly terrified" and was stepping up security at the property near Potters Bar. He told the Sunday Telegraph: "Myleene was aghast when she was told that the law did not allow her to defend herself at home. "All she did was scream loudly and wave the knife to try and frighten them off." Klass' fiance Graham Quinn was away on business at the time of the scare. It came amid calls for greater rights for people to defend themselves against intruders on their property. In December, Munir Hussain was jailed for attacking a man who tied up his family in their home. He and his brother used a cricket bat to beat one of the intruders." I would be so depressed if I had to live under this society. Though my thoughts on the matter are less relevant, I am much more interested in yours. What are your thoughts on the article? The general issue?
Answer: It is not illegal to carry or use a knife in ones home in the UK. Hertfordshire police have denied that anyone told Mylene that she might be accused of carrying an offensive weapon. Self defence is not illegal in Britain. The use of "reasonable force" is permitted. This means that the response must be proportional to the threat. Munir Hussain was not jailed for defending himself. The thief had already left his house and Mr Hussain and his family were no longer in danger. Mr Hussain and his brothers found one of the intruders and repeatedly smashed him around the head with a cricket bat, causing permanent brain damage. This is NOT self defence. I would be prepared to use any force or weapon at my disposal to prevent someone entering my home or threatening any member of my family. This is not the same as attacking someone who is no longer a threat. I would not be concerned that the police would prosecute me, they are actually very sympathetic to the victims of crime, providing the "victims" do not take the law into their own hands. EDIT: Several people have mistakenly said that carrying an offensive weapon is an offence, even in your own home. This is nonsense, to be classed as an offensive weapon, the article, whatever it is, must be being carried or brandished in a PUBLIC place. Auriflamme, thank you, I stand corrected. ;)
Since real estate is worth more than gold...?
...shouldn't we combine funerals with weddings, christenings, retirement parties, and open houses? For example: "Danforth Giddle passed away Wednesday the 24th after a lengthily battle with local drug lords in Tijuana. He leaves behind his loving daughter, Marta Giddle, 23, who will be marrying Spencer Juarez on the same day at the Holiday Inn Resort in the Cervesa Room after the memorial service. Marta and Spencer, while still grieving for the loss of Danforth, welcome little Spence Jr. into the world and his christening, officiated by Padre Blow, will take place at the pool side after the Juarez/Giddle wedding. Drinks will be provided (because, let's be honest, you'll need 'em by this point). After Master Juarez's christening, please join the family in the Mexicali Tia lounge to offer congratulations to Tito Rodriguez, who is stepping down as VP of the Juarez Family Bidness after 6 fruitful, abundant years. Tito plans to move to Venezuela and change his name to Bonita. Concluding the day's festivities, all are invited to visit Danforth Giddle's 16 bedroom, 9 bathroom villa-style home in the Rosarito region of Tijuana, in the Baja California area. This home, located on a quiet cul de sac near schools with armed, private guards, boasts an amazing Western view where you can watch the sunset over the tumbleweeds! An existing staff will cook authentic Swiss food, and make sure your rooms are cleaned every morning! Two of the bathrooms come equipped with jet tubs, HD TVs, and bowling alleys! Act fast - priced at just 11.9 million, this Southern Paradise is sure to move fast! Poll: Chips and pop, or chocolate and coffee?

On SkyNews and anywhere else, who are they talking about when they refer to "the City"?
With the capital c? Answer: The City was originally the City of London the financial hub of the world. It is now shorthand for the people who work in finance and banking in the UK.
Is Brett's possible move to the Blue's a good signing for him and the region and NZ in general?
Speaking as a Crusaders supporter, I have always thought that Brett has talent by the bucketful, but he needs to cement his place at playing 10 all the time. Just his luck to be in a franchise that pops out 10s at will. I have been impressed with his play at Provincal level this year, and yes I rate him, can be a little erratic at times, and has defensive lapses at times, but so did Foxy, and Merhts and Spencer. Good luck to him at the Blues!
Answer: I think it will take more than steven brett (as good as he is) who is prob 3rd best 1st five in canterbury behind slade and carter, to fix Auckland's rugby. Their problems stem from their rugby culture driven by egos at the top.(lets have a latte frik everyone else) Canterbury is like heartland rugby with support and guidance all the way down through the grades starts at year 1 and it shows on the field. Ask yourself why a province like auckland with the huge 1st grade comps playing every weekend huge player base to choose from and they still can't find a team that can win consistently. The rest of the country are always told how great auckland is and 1/3 of the countries population lives there yet they get owned week in and week out by smaller union up and down the land. Bretts good but not that good.
Only 1 National Guardsmen Needed for 50 Miles of Border Is border so secured every 50 miles seem right?
According to press reports, Texas governor Rick Perry will deploy 200 National Guard members to the Mexican border to aid Texas Rangers in quelling border violence. According to the reports, the campaign of Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, who is challenging Perry for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, called his announcement more "empty rhetoric and broken promises." Since the border region is subject to violence 24 hours a day, seven days a week, of the 200 Guardsmen only about 40 would be on duty at any one time. As the border with Mexico is 1969 miles long, it means that each member of the Guard would be responsible for 50 miles of it. "Even Superman would have a hard time policing 50 miles of winding border," said Glenn Spencer of American Border Patrol. Perry has a very bad record on border and illegal immigration issues, and opposes building a border fence, the only thing that has proven to work.
Answer: I'd prefer to see the special forces from each branch of the military there.
In the beginning was there was Y-chromosomal Adam then Mitochondrial Eve?
By analyzing the Y-chromosome DNA from males in all regions of the world, geneticist Spencer Wells has concluded that all humans alive today are patrilinealy descended from a single man who lived in Africa around 60,000 years ago. Mitochondrial Eve (mt-mrca) is the name given by researchers to the woman who is defined as the matrilineal most recent common ancestor (MRCA) for all currently living humans. Passed down from mother to offspring, her mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is now found in all living humans: all mtDNA in every living person is derived from hers. Mitochondrial Eve is the female counterpart of Y-chromosomal Adam, the patrilineal most recent common ancestor, although they lived at different times. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y-chromosomal_Adam
Answer: Don't believe what you read on wikipedia! We didn't all decend from a single male and female. Mitochondrial Eve - An Explanation Mitochondrial Eve represents one of the most poorly understood scientific ideas of the 20th century. In its time it has been feted and condemned, frequently by the same parties at different times. The premise of the idea is that we can all be traced back to a single woman living in Africa approximately 200,000 years ago. What are Mitochondria? Mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell. Technically 'organelles', mitochondria are essentially symbiotes1 – they consume the sugars that our bodies have converted from food, and in return produce electricity with which to power the cell. But why is it considered separate from the cell? This is an important distinction. The reason why mitochondria are considered separate is because they have their own DNA – DNA which is unaffected by other genetic exchanges. Why is Mitochondrial DNA important? Well, put it this way. You are a genetic mix of your parents, each of which contributed half of your genetic material. They, of course, have gone through the same process and share an equal split of their parent's DNA. This means if you stop this back-tracking process with your grandparents, you are already a genetic mix of six distinct individuals who may have come from different regions of the planet. But one factor remains constant – the mitochondrial DNA hasn't altered at all – it remains intact through the female line. Male sperm contains only enough mitochondria to power the sperm to the surface of the egg – it does not enter the egg. The egg, however, contains mitochondria that have been passed from mother to daughter for countless generations. The only way for mitochondrial DNA to alter is by natural mutations, which occur very slowly when compared with the almost frantic gene mixing we and our parents take part in. How Does This Relate to an 'Eve' Concept? Because the rate of mitochondrial genetic mutation is slow, it can be used as a clock to turn back time to a period before the mutations had crept in. When mitochondrial DNA from certain populations in Africa are sampled, they can be compared with European mitochondrial DNA. The mutation difference between the two populations can then be compared, and a 'clock' can be produced, enabling the rate of mutation in mitochondria to be established. This produces a time-scale which indicates when modern Europeans first left Africa. The genetic survey that produced the whole Mitochondrial Eve scenario didn't just sample Africans and Europeans – it sampled genes from people all over the planet. When mitochondrial DNA was compared, the survey discovered a startling result. Fundamental similarities in mitochondrial DNA in living humans suggested that we all contain genetic material from a single woman who was living in Africa around 200,000 years ago. That's Ridiculous – How Could a Single Being Populate a Planet? And this is where the confusion sets in. A single organism can't populate a planet (arguments about amoeba aside). The evidence didn't suggest a single woman living in isolation from members of her own species. What it suggested was a genetic bottleneck – a period in human history when the population was so small that the genetic expressions of a single woman could have an impact on all humans living on the planet today. She didn't live alone – she would have lived within a community. She didn't just pump babies out, either. There is no reason to suppose that she had more than one female child. But there is reason to suppose that whatever female children she had, they contained specific advantages for survival over the rest of the population.
New study hints at positive cloud feedback. Thoughts?
http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/325/5939/460?rss=1 "This observational analysis further indicated that clouds act as a positive feedback in this region on decadal time scales." Full paper available here: http://www.drroyspencer.com/Clement-et-al-cloud-feedback-Science-2009.pdf Of course, Spencer has his knickers in a twist about this, and posted a lengthy rebuttal in his blog. http://www.drroyspencer.com/ I have to say, Spencer makes a pretty convincing argument that changes in cloud cover are only meaningful on a global scale. His other argument that the decrease in cloud cover may be causing the warming, and not the other way around, seems kind of weak. I can't imagine that the authors of the study did not consider this possibility, but I don't know. So, what are your thoughts on the study and Spencer's response to it?
Answer: The whole cloud forcing issue boils down to regional effects with global implications, so it appears to me the point he is making is obfuscatory at best. For example, even Spencer points out the clouds in the tropics are most relevant for climate. Yet he doesn't carp out the global/regional problem in that case now does he? His argument that the lack of clouds is forcing the warming rather than the reverse is weird. Why are there fewer clouds? Doesn't his analysis show there should be more clouds, and that the effect of clouds is cooling? He quietly doesn't mention these points, just goes back to saying well, correlation doesn't imply causation. It's an old dodge. Clement et al. did consider that the decrease in cloud cover might be forcing the warming, but unlike Spencer, they considered whether the solar energy flux at mid-latitudes was enough to cause the observed warming. When it wasn't, they concluded the clouds were responding to the warming, since a lot of the heat required for the warming was being transported in from somewhere else. Spencer doesn't like the implication of the results, so he chirps out some drivel that sounds good about how it's wrong. The skeptics lap it up and drool it back out. I do like how he is setting up the common skeptic boo-hoo cry of how the mean nasty journal may not let his really excellent paper get published. I'll bet it got savaged, literally shredded, in review. That thought makes me chuckle.
Isnt Noah our most recent common ancestor (MRCA)?
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2002/12/1212_021213_journeyofman.html "By analyzing DNA from people in all regions of the world, geneticist Spencer Wells has concluded that all humans alive today are descended from a single man who lived in Africa around 60,000 years ago." OK. Outside of flawed dating and preconceived ideas of how we got here, this isn't too bad. Replace Africa with Eden and knock off 53,500 years or so,from that "theory" and you have yourself a creation and a flood. If the genetic experts are still in disagreement over the common ancestor thing, wouldn't it be valuable to see the creation account as more than myth? Afraid of Africa...LOL Queen Kira:preconceived "geologic column....LOL.... You know what Im talking about Rick: If science can disagree over a couple million years for thier theory why can I have just 50000? Betafish: 6000 years ago God created the heaven and earth, 4400 years ago came a world wide flood, saving only 8 people and 2 of every kind. Rick again: mankind is inbred!
Answer: Actually, since Noah came from Adam, I think we can push that back even farther. Noah was a "bottleneck", but not the beginning. The part about "from Africa 60,000 years ago" is based not on fact but on a preconceived bias about where they believe humanity originated from, and they believe it has to fit their preconceived "geologic column", which is severely outdated. They also found several years ago that, by tracing mDNA, they found that all humanity came from a single female. *I* could have told them that!
