Sophie\'s Choice Novel questions & answers
I need to do a school project for AP English in which I create an artistic recreation that represents some aspect of the novel. My ideas are either something to do with music (whether I burn a disc, or w/e) or some sort of painting. Are those good ideas? If you have better ones, could you please let me know?
Answer: you could make a video maybe find a few people to help with it maybe this would depend on when the project is do make it a short film!!!!!
Sophie's Choice movie vs book?
I just finished reading Sophie's Choice and really enjoyed it. It is a brilliantly written novel, but I just could not get through watching the movie. Is it because I watched it just after reading the book? Is it just me or is the movie EXTREMELY slow and does not do the book justice? I had to stop the movie, should i give it another chance? Does it get better?
Answer: The opposite happened to me i started the book and couldnt get throught page 200 because i thought it was extremely slow. However the movie i thought was excelllent. You're right it starts off kinda not so good but its one of my favorite movies actually. Yup watch it, plus Meryl Streep is amazing in it. Now its my turn to ask.. do you think i should finish the book?
Can anyone recommend any fictional Holocaust books...?
...I am interested to read about an account or a personal image of what happened in the Holocaust. I've heard of novels/books like Schindler's List but I've seen the film so I don't think I'll see it as any different. Is The White Hotel a good book or Sophie's Choice? I want to read a novel that vividly draws a scene of what it was like in the death camps and peoples feelings etc. Can anyone recommend books that have personally moved them? Thanks in advance.
Answer: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak-- I thought it was really good. (and when i read it i didn't really like many books outside of fantasy) It's narrated by death but is about a girl living in germany during the holocaust.

In my AP Literature class, we have just been assigned a course-long project in which we have to create a "critical file" on a novel (or perhaps play) of literary merit, ie. advanced high school or above level. The work must be old enough, and controversial enough, to acquire much criticism. Some novels my classmates have chosen for example include "Pride and Prejudice" and "Into the Wild." Overall, I'm looking for more of a mainstream controversial novel, ideally less than 500 pages or so. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. ps. I have been considering 'Crime and Punishment' and 'Sophie's Choice' and maybe 'Great Expectations"--any input?
Answer: Crime an Punishment is good, but would be difficult for a project. I liked Great Expectations, but almost no one else in my class did. Here are some that I can think of: Hamlet (my favorite play) In Cold Blood - Capote 1984 - Orwell anything by Ray Bradbury Devil in the White City - Larson Les Miserables - Hugo Dune - Herbert Cat's Cradle (or Slaughter-House Five)by Kurt Vonnegut

Answer: Maybe Animal Farm or 1984 by orwell? Although animal farm is rather short but both are certainly old enough. doing something by Shakespeare would be quite interesting- maybe Hamlet? Whoever said Farenhiet 451 that is a good choice also

Answer: I found 'Crime & Punishment' pretty heavy slogging, and I've read a lot of those earlier Russian novelists. I would recommend "The Life of Pi", a fantasy adventure novel written by Canadian author Yann Martel. It won a Booker Prize, the best novel in the British Commonwealth. It's charming and compelling. Also, "Oryx & Crake", which is set in the near-future. It's quite dark, but very thought-provoking. I'm sorta surprised that the author, Margaret Atwood, didn't get the Nobel for it. Neither of these is very old: they're of about the same vintage as "Into the Wild" (which, incidentally, is well-written non-fiction.) But because of their subject matter, and because both are important works of fiction, they have received much literary attention. If you're up to something really controversial, check out Leonard Cohen's 1960s novel "Beautiful Losers", written just before he started as a singer. I can't think of a more controversial novel! If "Into the Wild" is permissible, I would suggest "Into the Air", about an ill-fated Everest expedition. The writing is at about the same level as "Wild", but the subject matter of "Air" is extremely controversial .
How would you describe Sophie Zawistowski in the book Sophie's Choice? ?
I'm writing a positive review on the (wonderful) character of Sophie from the novel/movie Sophie's Choice, but am lacking the stereotypes(archetypes) that describe her. She is a survivor and a hero. she's plays the part of a ' wounded child' as well. what do you think is the most accurate way to describe her character?
Answer: I'd say Sophie felt tortured and guilty for the choice she was forced to make, for the feelings that she had probably denied to herself that she had which surfaced when confronted with that agonizing decision. She probably also felt survivor's guilt because she lived, when so many didn't. She possibly also felt like her experiences had set her apart and she didn't know how to fit in with the "normal world" after having gone through what she did. She also felt like she didn't deserve any better treatment than her lover gave her.
Novel 'Sophie's Choice'?
I am almost through reading the novel "Sophie's Choice and loved it! What were your thoughts on the book?
Answer: It was very well written and a great story/stories. The characters were believable and you were sympathetic to them. But such sad, sad people and poor Sophie's choice. How would you decide such an awful thing, I don't think that I could. Good book. They did a pretty good job with the movie too.
Where can I find a book summary (similar to Cliffs Notes or Spark Notes) for the novels?
