Safer Internet Day Australia questions & answers
There's this Yahoo Answers Australian user, Edvard J or something like that, on the religion category and every other answer he has he's putting down Americans ... "Americans are uncivilized" ... "Americans are thick" ... "Americans aren't welcome in Australia" ... etc, etc, etc. I mean, I guess I shouldn't care what ONE guy thinks, but this guy is level 7, one of the top contributors in multiple categories and he has dozens of fans. I frequently see comments on here from Australian people saying Americans should accept socialism, ban guns, etc, and that we're stupid for not being like Australia or whatever. The other day, I was viewing this article on an Australian news website that was comparing this American "tea party" group to the KKK (outright lie), and the comments to the article were ridiculous "America is a Christian theocracy", "Americans need to be stereilised", etc, etc, etc. On THIS category I see comments saying Americans are all stupid, Americans are too conservative, that Obama is stupid, that American Democrats are comparable to some racist group in Australia ... WTF? I don't see any of this sort of stuff on other travel categories. Can someone explain what the deal is? And the reason I ask is because I plan(ned) on going to Australia with two friends, but I feel anxious about going now and quite honestly feel like I'd rather not go after seeing all the animosity on here. I haven't told my friends about this, they don't use this site or even the internet much so what would they know, but I don't feel comfortable spending so much money on a trip to the place if that's how it is. I do think I have a right to be concerned, considering how much $$$ it costs to get to the other side of the world. Ashlee, if you've been taught in school that the U.S. is *still* testing nuclear weapons in the Pacific Ocean (we're not) and you're presented Michael Moore movies (biased with a political agenda) as pure fact ... then the issue is obviously worse than I thought. But thanks for the insightful answer anyways.
Answer: Rupert Murdoch is going to do a lot of pennants for the his media deluge inflicted on the planet through his media outlets. You shouldn't trust most of the "news" reports that are broadcast because they are biased towards their board of directors agenda. I think that if you come to Australia it will be an experience of a lifetime. Most Australians will not judge you on where you come from but the type of person that you are. If they don't like your attitude they may then criticise you on where you come from. They don't tend to intellectualise their dislike of people and try to keep it simple and to the lowest common denominator. Now this is not to say that Aussies are simple or stupid but they don't prioritise that way of thinking. You will find a huge amount of Aussies that will want to have a good time and relax; they are not snobbish and don't like snobs or overly politically correct behaviour. As a lot of people around the world most of their perceived knowledge of other countries is through the media, movies and TV. Although you can get a lot of good, useful and true information this way most of it is biased and incorrect. I have had American friends and worked with a few and they seemed to find Australia a breath of fresh air compared to the States and the feeling/pace is more relaxed. Your concern about spending the money to come to Australia is unfounded. As I said before you will totally enjoy yourself in Aus. If you are staying at a backpacker hostel you will meet heaps of Aussies as well as other travellers. The thing about generalising about any culture, race, religion or group of people is that it is stupid, narrowminded and ignorant. People seem to get very defensive on YA and use this forum to spew out tirades about their lack of knowledge and insecurities. This is not the case 100% of the time but is a regular occurence. The fact remains that if you get two "different" groups of people (race, religon, culture, sports fans, car makes..........) you find find more similarities between them than differences.
Argument over money with my boyfriend?
I am sitting here with my boyfriend in an internet cafe in Vietnam trying not to scream in his face. He thinks I'm over reacting. I think he has been completely out of order. I will tell you my side of the story he will then write his. Me (girlfriend). We have been together for 5 years and have always wanted to travel. 14 months of hard saving and living at home, we finally set off abroad. 3 days before the flight he lost his bank card. He promiced that he would get the card posted when we got to bangkok. When we got to bangkok he then decided the postal system wasn't safe enough. To cut a long story short. We have both been living off the funds that I saved whilst being at home. Now, 5 months later after lie after lie after lie I have got to the bottom of his money situation and found that he has nothing left in his account. He already owes me 1400 pounds and we have no where near finished our trip. I am pissed off because it has taken so long for him to come out and tell me this. I don't mind lending the money but I can't stand that he lied to me. him: 'we' saved for 14 months, her refusing to spend a penny, in tears most nights because she was depressed living with her parents and in a rubbish job. i said lets take longer to save and she said no way. i still went out with my friends and didn't exoerience the same depression she did. i was given an ultimatum, we leave by next month or she goes alone. bare in mind actually getting there cost over 1000, i was paying rent and had my bike/insurance to pay while her family pays everything for her.... including the horse. we left, 5 months in i told her i had little/no money left and am going home. i have a 400 per week tax free job waiting anytime (the same job i left) so give me 2 months and ill meet you in australia. i should've told her earlier. its an easy fix after 2 months and then we can begin working in australia (always the plan for both of us) i told her im going but she said come to vietnam and then go.... it will be cheaper for both of us the end

Does anyone else think this 16yr old girl is weird for doing this?
I mean it's dangerous but it's something she wants to do, I mean winter time is coming to and how ruff the waves are and etc. I just hope she makes it ok. SYDNEY (Oct. 18) - A 16-year-old Australian steered her bright pink yacht out of Sydney Harbor on Sunday to start her bid to become the youngest person to sail solo and unassisted around the world. Jessica Watson's plan to make a 23,600-mile (38,000-kilometer) journey through some of the world's most treacherous waters sparked a debate in Australia about whether someone so young should be allowed to try such a potentially dangerous feat. Watson and her family insist she is an experienced and capable sailor who has studied navigation, electronics and maritime safety procedures. Although she will sail solo and unassisted, she will be in constant contact with her support team via radio, e-mail and a blog. The teenager did not speak with reporters before she left, and it was her mom who first updated the Internet diary Sunday. "I know you are all anxious to hear from Jess, but she's a little preoccupied on her first day, so she asked me to post a quick note to let everyone know that the departure went well this morning," Julie Watson wrote on the blog. "I would like to sincerely thank all those wonderful people who came out on the harbor this morning and down to the marina to wish Jess well," she posted only hours after giving her daughter a tearful hug and saying goodbye. Watson sailed her pink, 34-foot (10-meter) yacht out of Sydney under gray skies and slightly choppy conditions. She smiled and waved to scores of well-wishers on land and in boats that had gathered on the harbor. "I think a lot of Australians are nervous for Jessica. I'm nervous for her," Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard told Nine Network television. "But my words at this stage, given that she's determined to go, would be to wish her the best of luck and to urge her to keep safe." Watson's plans suffered several setbacks before she finally left. Last month, her yacht collided with a cargo ship as she sailed toward Sydney to make final preparations — an accident that triggered some calls for her to abandon the attempt. More recently, strong winds in Sydney delayed her planned departure last week
Answer: Well I read this and IMO its the stupidest thing someone can do for attention...what does she plan on getting out of this? She is putting her life on the line and it wont be for any benefits to anyone. Its sick and stupid and if she is thinking its a good idea then she should go ahead and do it, and when she dies or something or never returns her stupid parents are going to cry, but they could have stopped her, and they didnt so w/e Things like this I never understnad what thye are thinking and it just doesnt make any type of sense to me.

Fathers rights in Vic Australia?
Sorry if this is a bit long but these kinda things are rarely simple My current partner conceived a child from a one-night stand. He tried to make it work after he found out but she didn't want a father she only wanted a sperm donor. She made his life hell until his mum pointed out the kid was better off shared between 2 happy homes than in a war zone and they broke it off at about 6mths into the pregnancy After the birth she made sure every encounter was horrible experience for all involved then at about 4mths disappeared changed her address and ph number so we couldn't find her again She lied and got his child support tripled she would have to know someone there they sent him a letter asking him to attend a meeting with a time/date but no address and the 13 number couldn't tell him where the meting was going to be obviously he couldn't afford it and got into arrears but since it was re-assessed back down he has been paying constantly for last 2 years Suddenly out of the blue last October she got back in contact was not happy to see me with him at all (He is now 3 and we have been together 3 years) pretty much made everything awkward and refused to let my partner see him without her present but her negative attitude was that bad it was affecting the child's interactions with everyone including his grandparents. She collected his xmas presents in early Jan and that was the last we saw of her. My partner has been going through a lot including the death of his grandmother who he was close to on the 23rd Dec and with the looming recession we're facing bankruptcy with our business he couldn't handle having to deal with her as well so let it slide until now We sent her a message asking for him to pick up the child for a few hours on the weekend she has not replied. Her friend told us she is planning on going to legal aid and block my partners access based on the fact he is always in and out of the child's life (but I'm sure she won't mention her disappearing act) what are chances of succeeding We want her to attend the family dispute resolution thing but there is a 6 week wait and her friend has told us she is now preg to a one night stand off the internet and the only thing she'll say about him is he has 2 other kids that he's not allowed to see but won't say why She rarely supervises him, leaves him alone in the bath, doesn't feed him properly and drags him around wherever she wants to go even if it's odd hours or he is ill. We're talking about her best friend calling 'the enemy' and saying u need to do something he isn't safe but what on earth do we do? Her own mother keeps threatening to report her but never does. We're genuinely worried about his safety last year he was hospitalised with pneumonia. She had taken him to the hospital the night before called us to say he still wasn't well but wouldn't leave him with us while she went to the beach for the day the next day he was in hospital for a week and that's only one example. What can my partner do?

Constantly Crashing Computer?
Hello all. I'm having problems with my new laptop. I recently bought an HP TX2508ca convertible tablet PC and love it. It runs on Windows Vista Home Premium. But lately I've been having some problems. It all started when I tried to initiate a webchat on Windows Live Messenger. Everytime I would try to start a webchat, WLM would freeze. Even when I tried to manually end the process tree, nothing would happen. I would have to restart my computer. And WLM didn't only freeze when I tried to start a webchat, but after I tried to adjust the brightness, color, contrast, etc.. on the integrated webcam using WLM, the same thing happened. It froze up. After that things became really weird. Everytime I logged on to WLM, my computer would crash. The screen would just suddenly turn black after 10 minutes on WLM and the only way to solve it was to force shut down the computer and then turn it back on again. So what I did was run it in safe mode and performed a full system scan using Norton AntiVirus. Twice. The first time Norton found one tracking cookie. The second time, Norton found a couple of Trojans and a few viruses. I fixed the problems but then after restarting the computer in normal mode, things started to get even weirder. For starters, every time I log in, I receive a message saying that the file 1A3.tmp is unknown and asks me to select a program on the list to run it or to look on the web for a suitable program. I always click cancel. But then a webpage will automatically open and a random website will open. And every ten minutes, a random web page just opens up on itself. I could be doing nothing at all on the computer but a web page just pops up. The pages that have been popping up are: http://medicalbillsite.info/search.php?q=salary+sacrifice+australia http://machineryltd.net/search/index.php?q=day+night http://bionewsline.net/search/index.php?q=heel+picture+shemale http://eurostarway.net/search/index.php?q=heirloom+portraits And also the system bar (at the bottom of the screen) disappears every now and then. I have to open task manager, go to "Run New Task" and type in "explorer" to get it to work again. And also, whenever I log back on, internet explorer doesn't show pictures. I have to go to "Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced" and check/tick the "Show pictures" box. But I have to do this every time I log on or restart. The info is not being stored in memory. Currently I'm running a full system scan in normal mode using Norton AntiVirus. It has detected and deleted something called "Bloodhound.SONAR.1" as well as a file titled "Downloader" Norton tells me I have to restart my computer in order to complete the process of getting rid of "Bloodhound.SONAR.1" Which I will do after posting this. Can anybody help me? What in the world is going on with my computer? I need advice seriously because I'm a student and I need to use this laptop to do work. Please. Help!
Answer: You have some serious malware on your pc. Norton's does ok but it doesn't get a lot of trojans. Before you give up and reinstall windows try this just to see if it quarantines your problem. http://www.stopzillascan.com/ I actually bought this product a few years ago and it works great. I am an above average pc user and know how to do a lot of things but the truth is when you get hit by something like that it can take hours to remove and some times with out success. I got tired if fighting and used the stopzilla program along with my Norton's and have never had a problem since. Try the free trial and see if it solves your problem. Hey..it's free and it will quarantine it if it can. It won't remove it unless you buy it. You can't go wrong with a free sample. Hope it helps.
I'm in my last year of sixth form and considering taking a year out to travel?
Hi, I'm a 17 year old female considering taking a year out before university and want to visit UK> San Francisco> Las Vegas> Los Angeles> Cook Islands> Fiji> New Zealand> Australia. I doubt any of my friends would come and I have some questions: Would it be safe to travel on my own through on of those internet sites that set up your holiday for you and introduce you to a group of people? I'm a very clean person and not showering for a day makes me feel queasy. Will this be a problem? I do not really want to travel the far east because of safety issues, am I worrying with out reason? Is it worth traveling round? How much money will I need? Thank you Nicole xx
Answer: I think its a great idea, i have a few friends that did just that..and yes they were female.. you'll grow up and mature so much (and the showering thing wont be a problem!) and you'll be with lots of other travellers and tourists so dw! try gapyear.com, that has loads of advice :)
Visiting Yankees stadium for the first time?
Hi there, It’s short notice, but I’m hoping that someone could help me out with a few answers to regarding my upcoming visit to New York. Even though I’m from Australia I’ve been a fan of the Yankees since I was a kid back in the mid 60’s, ever since I first sighted the Old Gary Cooper film ‘Pride of the Yankees’. Back in those days nobody but nobody followed American sports down under, and baseball games never showed up on TV with any regularity until the 80’s, and even then it was usually only the World series that got televised. One way or the other though I’ve always remained a fan of the team, mainly through the papers and magazines, until cable came along and made it much easier to watch games during the season. The advent of the internet also helped to keep up to date. I’ve been a fan now for 40 years, and my one big desire has always been to actually see the Yanks play on their hollowed turf in the Bronx. With the news that they were going to tear down the stadium after the 2008 season I thought my chance had finally gone of ever visiting the ‘house that Ruth built’. Well lo and behold my wife came to the rescue recently by presenting me with airline tickets to New York and a match day ticket for my 49th birthday, so I’m finally on my way! Can you believe it – this will not only be the first time I’ll actually get to see the Yankees play live – at their home stadium – it will actually be the very first MLB game I’ve ever attended. 40 years of being a long distance fan, and I’m finally going to be there! So there’s my history. Now I have some questions that need answering, and I’m hoping that someone can find the time to possibly help out. 1)How early does Yankee Stadium open on game day? I’m actually going to be in town for the Saturday game against the Royals, and would dearly like to find the time to see Monument Park before the game starts. It’s my understanding that it stays open to the public until 45 minutes before the game is due to start. Which way do I need to head once I’m in through the main entrance of the stadium to get to Monument Park? My ticket is in section M6, so I’m going to have to work up and right around the stadium to eventually get to my seat. 2)I’m going to be visiting Central Park during the morning on Saturday, and am aiming to get to the stadium from the Subway station on Lexington and 86th. Which platform do I need to go to, and is half an hour sufficient time to allow for the trip? 3)I’m leaving from La Guardia airport straight after the game. I’ve read a couple of different ways to get there from the stadium. One opinion states that the best way to get to the airport is to catch a train to Grand Central and then hop on the NY Airport Service bus to La Guardia. The other view states that the best way is to simply head a couple of stops away from the stadium to the subway station at Lexington/125th and take the M60 bus to the airport. Any views on the matter? 4)Given where I’m going to be sitting, is the net going to make it a pain to take photographs of the on field action? Like I said, I’ve never been to a game before, so I don’t know what to expect. 5)Some general tourist questions. I traveled through NY in 1981 when the city was probably at its worst safety wise – in winter by the way, which explains why I didn’t try and see the Yanks play back then. I know things have changed dramatically since then, but how much safer is it in reality? I’m planning on spending Friday morning at Battery Park, from where I’ll gradually work my way up Manhattan during the day to the Rockefeller Center and St. Patrick’s by 7 or 8 – the latter closes at 8.30. From there I plan on hopping on the subway and making my way over to my hotel in the Bronx – is the subway safe at that time of the evening? Any thoughts or answers to the questions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance
Answer: My friend, I'm glad there is always a Yankee fan outside of the USA. And as a native New Yorker and Yankee fan myself, I would glady help you the best I can. 1. You are right, Monument Park will remain open upto 45 minutes before the start of the game. My advice is get to the Stadium at least 2 to 3 hours early so you be able to get Monument Park before it close. The Stadium has plenty of ushers and secuirty guards on hand to help you out. Just show them you ticket and they'll kindly direction to the right section. 2. Half an hour is very suffient enough to get from 86th Street to Yankee Stadium. At 86th Street, when enter the subway on the uptown (northbound) side, make a complete "U" turn and take the stairway leading to the express platform, which is one level below the local platform. Just look for the directional sign that says "Uptown and the Bronx" and the numbers 4 and 5. When you get to the lower level express platform, take the northbound #4 line (Green Line) from 86th Street to Yankee Stadium. The train runs express, so it will make stops at the following stations after 86th Street. 125th Street 138th Street-Grand Concourse 149th Street-Grand Concourse 161st Street-Yankee Stadium As the train leaves 149th Street - Grand Concourse, you will notice the train exiting the tunnel and onto a bridge above the street, what we New Yorkers would call an "el". You will begin to see Yankee Statdium on left side of the train, that mean you about arrive at 161st Street-Yankee Stadium. 3. From Yankee Statdium to LaGuardia Airport. My advice, take the subway to Grand Central Terminal and then take the New York Airport Service bus from Grand Central directly to LaGuardia. The trip from Grand Central to LaGuardia should take about 15 to 30 minutes. 4. Being that you're going to be sitting behind home plate, the safety netting will not be that much of a pain. You'll still be able to see the game. 5. My friend, New York City is very safe, you will be very fine in Manhattan. Besides, the crime rate in New York City has been to the lowest level since 1963, thanks to the extraordinary effort of the NYPD and community leaders. The subway is also safe, you will be in good company when you're riding the subway at 8:30 at night or later, especially when the weather is warm. By the way, why stay in the Bronx? There are not many hotels in the borough, and the very few of here are small motor inns, cater to those traveling cross country. Since you're 3 to 4 days in the New York City, might as well stay in Manhattan. You will be a lot closer to a lot of the top tourist sites, except Yankee Stadium, than in the Bronx.
