She graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in '92. Since then she has held positions that have given her experience in nearly every phase of a sewn garment: design, pattern making, spec technician, factory liaison, production sewing, quality control, retail buying, retail sales, and alterations. For nearly four fun-filled, challenging and successful years, Shauna ran a business called First Samples. It was a place that approached the cottage industry of sewing in a way that connected designers, sewing enthusiasts, pattern makers and other professionals in the Austin community. The concept behind First Samples was recognized nationally by Time Magazine, the Today Show and more. Her new venture, SS Pirate Jenny (www.sspiratejenny.com), is an indie clothing company of her own. Along side of this she teaches a series of fashion sewing classes under the business of Selvedge Sewing (www.selvedgesewing.com). This is the best of both worlds for her for now: Working with indie designers, becoming an indie designer, continuing to teach and share knowledge and staying in touch with true creativity.Website or portfolio:http://www.sspiratejenny.com/#PortfolioLaisa Macias / LaLa has always had a love of fashion, design, and craft. She has dabbled in many aspects of art including drawing, painting, and photography. Her Grandma Lala was a seamstress who taught her to sew, knit, and crochet at a very young age. In Jr. High she learned to use a sewing machine, but eventually majored in business. She has worked in retail clothing sales for years now, but began taking sewing classes again about 3 years ago after the passing of her Grandmother. It was the one thing she had left to hold on to and she says “It’s the best decision I ever made!” She has since built up her skills by making clothes for herself and family members, as well as entering The Little Black Dress contest where she placed in the top 8 last year. This year she has really put her best foot forward after working alongside some wonderful indie designers in Austin, Texas. Inspired to follow her dream of designing clothes she looks forward to a very bright future where she cannot wait to share her love of fashion with you and the world!www.sewlala.etsy.comMalissa Long began designing eco-friendly designs from a love of transforming the use of everyday things. She finds inspiration in the uncommon, using unusual objects like bottle caps, washers and aluminum cans to give her fashions an interesting edge. A handmade junkie herself, Anslee fell in love with Austin'sappeal for locally made crafts and couture, and thus began sewingtogether her own spunky pieces of artistic flair with aneco-consciousness that is so dear to her and the city she adores. "Be inspired, not influenced," she says as it becomesher message to all people to challenge themselves: Whose eyes can youopen? Keep yours deliciously peeled for SavannahRed. http://lyinginthegrass.blogspot.com Chia Guillory has been designing clothes since she was a little girl; she still has volumes of sketch books of her fashion ideas (mixed in with drawings of horses, unicorns, wizards, and fairies) and an extensive collection of hand-sewn victorian-inspired pieces for her vintage dolls (including hats and little hat boxes!). Many people told her that she would grow up to be a fashion designer and she would indignantly say “no, I am going to be an artist!”. Well, they were right. Chia makes art in the form of fashion- everything from her famous faux fur hats and custom couture pieces to costumes and dance-wear. And she also makes art from found object sculptures to figure studies on paper and canvas. Voted ‘Best Clothing Designer’ in the 2006- 2009 Austin Chronicle Readers’ Poll, Chia has long since been an Austin favorite with her fearless colorful adult and children’s clothing and accessories. This super stylish yet eco-friendly designer always keeps her heart close to preserving the environment while celebrating fashion; using the best fabrics from decades past assures that each piece is one of a kind while being kind to the environment. Featured in publications ranging from Elle, Tattoos for Women, Parent’s Magazine, and most recently in W Magazine (in a spread photographed by Jurgen Teller) Chia continues to reach a wider national audience. Her work is carried in many cities including Seattle, Brooklyn, Vancouver, San Francisco and Austin. Her celebrity clients include a slew of Austin-based musicians and artists (two of her dresses have been worn to the Grammy’s) as well as a short list of wider-known celebrities who have aquired Chiahats (including Joan Baez!).http://www.chiahats.comhttp://www.chiahats.etsy.comTina Sparkles is a creative activist, pro-am fashion designer and freelance fashion sewing instructor. She stopped buying new clothes in 2005 because she wanted to stop contributing to the cycle of mass production and its effects on people and the environment; so instead she makes a lot of her own clothes, refashions vintage & thrift finds and scores big time at clothes swaps. She has a book coming out September 14, 2010 through Taunton Press called Little Green Dresses. The book is all about taking DIY fashion to the max with a special focus on refashioning fresh new items from already existing materials. Tina loves teaching people how to sew. She teaches fashion sewing classes on a regular basis at an Austin-based sewing studio called The Stitch Lab and also teaches fashion art workshops at a local private high school. She likes to get herself involved in the arts and fashion community as much as possible and recently participated as a mentor in the Advanced Young Artists program at Austin’s contemporary art space The Arthouse at the Jones Center. Paris Fashion Week questions & answers
"What is wrong with you?" Natally screeched, pointing a perfectly manicured finger at Larissa. "Who would want to skip a day at the spa for some French classes?" Larissa smiled. Even though they had only been friends for a few months Larissa felt like they'd known each other forever. They'd been through a lot--Natally had been the one to help Larissa get back on her feet when her mom disappeared. "Come on, Natally. I like languages! Especially since I'm going to Paris next week," Larissa said, turning her attention back to her French workbook. "Why didn't you say so then? Wait.." Natally started, her face lighting up with recognition. "Does this mean you're going to my fashion show?" "Darling, I wouldn't miss it for the world!" Larissa said playfully. But she knew she had another reason to go to Paris. She always felt watched here, and she wanted to get as far away as possible, at least for a couple of days. IMPROVEMENT:Change SCREECHED to ASKED IMPROVEMENT: change ROCOGNITON to REALIZATION
Answer: i think it's great. i love the friends that don't really connect, but still stick together, and it reminds e of a scene with my own friends... the last line, definitely twists it into something greater than friendship problems, and the characters are both interesting. i don't know if recognition is the best word for the phrase " her face lighting up with recognition". i think the word realization would work better. i definitely want to read more and the writing isn't unbearably choppy, so i do believe u've got the beginning of something great here. hope this helped, good luck, and happy writing ;]

What do you think of my first paragraph?
"What is wrong with you?" Natally screeched, pointing a perfectly manicured finger at Larissa. "Who would want to skip a day at the spa for some French classes?" She continued. Larissa smiled. Even though they had just met months ago Larissa felt like they had a been knowing eachother for a long time. Especially since Natally helped Larissa get back on her feet when she found out her mom disappeared. "Come on, Natally. I like languages. Especially since I'm going to Paris next week," Larissa said, turning her attention back to her French workbook. "Why didn't you say so then. Wait. Does this mean your going to my fashion show?" Natally said. "Darling, I wouldn't miss it for the world!" Larissa said playfully. But in her mind she knew she had another reason for going to Paris. People were always spying on her, and she wanted to get as far away as possible, at least for a couple of days. I know i have a grammar prob between you and you're and "had a been friends for a long time"
Answer: I think you should make a new paragraph when a new person speaks. "She continued" should not be capitalized and is redundant anyway. How many months ago did they meet? "Had a been knowing" is nonsense phrasing; try "had known" instead; "each other" is two words. "She found out her mom disappeared"--just "her mom disappeared," unless she's living across the country from her mom or something like that. "You're going to my fashion show" would be correct. "In her mind she knew" should be excised. Whack out that excess verbiage! It's pretty good, but it needs tightening up in some places and expansion in others. How old are these characters? Is Natally being spied on because of something to do with her mother's disappearance or is she just paranoid?

What do you think of my story?
Janette stood at the grave of her father and watched as the coffin descended into the earth. One day this would happen to me, but what it would be like down there?, She thought. Darkness would prevail and earthworms would gather the still fresh body and nibble at them till all that remains is bones. “You deserve that end,” she whispered as the coffin settled in the ground. She remembered the moment her father slapped her. It was on her last day of college when she returned home, deciding to tell her parents about the girl she loved. “We’ll live together,” she said as she sipped at a cup of tea on the lunch table, “WE already rented a house in west Virginia.” Her father moustache shook and he swatted the table with his hand then got to his feet. “You’re a shame to this family,” He slapped her. Janette tumbled back in her chair; her face hot with the power of his slap. “I hate you,” The word rang in her ear like a bell echoing down a vaulted hall. The look in her mother’s eyes reminded her of how she had always been careless towards her own good. She cared to show her good-natured side whenever someone was around, but when alone with her daughter she would get busy with phone calls, fashion magazines and housework. The days passed so fast and Janette could not help but to feel alone. Catherine has been gone for a year now and she missed her a lot. By night, she brought her picture and placed it against her chest. She ran the tip of her finger against Catherine’s pointed, small nose then kissed her good bye. In her dreams, she saw Catherine and her Dad standing at a golden door in a small garden. She walked at them. Her father frowned at Catherine then vanished behind the door. Catherine smiled at Janette and slowly a pair of wings appeared at her shoulders and she fluttered away; her feet hanging down behind her as if not a part of her body; as if she had no control over them. Next morning, Catherine woke up to her mother’s phone call. Still in bed, she raised the handle. “Mum, I’m sleeping. What do you want?” “You can be a bit polite; your father is dead but that’s not how you’re supposed to talk to your Mom.” “Sorry, Mom.” She sighed away from the handle, “Please, speak up I need to have a shower and go to work.” “ Your aunt is back from Paris. She wants to see you. I guess she has brought something for you. She will be back tomorrow. We’ll wait for you on dinner.” “I don’t want anything,” Janette said, “I just want you to leave me alone.” “I’ll leave you alone, you ungrateful slut, but first come and see what this lady wants.” “Bye, Mom.” Janette placed the handle back. She walked to the window and stood there for a moment wondering what Aunt Edna wanted her for. She never loved her; even when her father was around, she always treated her as if she never existed. For a second it seemed for Janette, that everyone treated her as if she didn’t exist. Even Catherine, she had not called her for two weeks, now. Last night Janette tried to call her but she could not find her at her room. After having a shower, Janette went to her work with a mug of espresso in her hand. She hated her job. For seven years, she has been working as a bookseller in a small shop facing the police station. She hated books. One day, she decided to leaf through a novel by Charles dickens and she eventually managed to sell it to one of the officers who came occasionally to the shop; his name was Oswald. At the beginning, Janette thought it strange to have an American named Oswald, but after asking him, he told her that he was of German origins. “You seem like you’re fond of books, Mrs. Janette.” He said, eyeing the badge needled to her Paige shirt. “I like books myself, but the life of an officer is so difficult.” Janette did not want to get interested in his talk. Many customers liked talking with her. When she was younger, Mrs. Fonda, her English teacher told her that the freckles at her cheeks made her seem like a friendly girl. Janette smirked at the memory but then she remembered that she never lingered in a relation ship. All of her life she wanted a friend, a father, a mother a sister, but she never had one. “Do you recommend other books, Mrs. Janette?” The officer said, running a finger through his brown hair that fell to his sweaty forehead. “ I trust the opinion of well read librarian like you.” She wanted to shout at him, “I don’t like books you idiot,” But she did not do so and she vanished behind one of the bookshelves and returned with an enormous book. “It’s Tolstoy,” she said, offering him the book. “You’d be interested in reading It.” she smiled, lowering her eyes to the ground and returned behind the counter. “War and peace, oh.” He said, turning the book in his hands. “I guess you choose for your customers according to their occupation.” “I don’t really choose, I guess I offered you what I like myself.” “But you look so young

PARIS EXPERTS: Which area of Paris is the best to stay at?
My husband and I are going to Paris for 2 weeks and we are into night-life, shopping, museums, restaurants, etc. We pretty much want to go and get a feel of life in Paris. We have been there before so this time we want to really experience Paris! I want to shop without having to take a metro for 30 minutes but I also want to be considerably close to the Eiffel Tower. We want to be kind of centrally located in EVERYTHING whether it be amazing malls, restaurants, sights, fashion shows, etc. What is a great neighborhood or specific hotel that would fit perfectly? I want the most convenient location for absolute fun! For all you Paris experts: PLEASE GIVE US THE 411 ON PARIS! I WANT TO HAVE THE BEST TIME OF MY LIFE :) PLEASE HELP!! :) :) I appreciate any of your help :)
Answer: I hesitate to answer this question because you're going to be offended by some of the things I say but here goes anyway. You may have been to Paris but you clearly are misinformed about its geography and structure. You want to be in the center then stay in the center. That's easy enough. Stay in the 1st, 4th, 5th or 6th arrondissements. You want, for some odd reason, to see the Eiffel tower every time you walk out your door then stay in the 7th or the northern half of the 16th. Of course these are primarily residential and on the west side of the city so you won't be central nor near all that much nightlife. You want malls? Well there aren't any other than, perhaps, the Forum des Halles and that's stretching the definition. Fashion shows? There aren't any that are open to the public other than faux fashion shows held for tourists in the big department stores. You want to get a feel for life in Paris then rent an apartment rather than staying in a hotel and, for God's sake, don't stay in some chain like Best Western. You want great shopping then wander around the back and side streets anywhere in the center and there will be hundreds of tiny boutique stores selling everything from trendy fashions to art to military memorabilia. (Paris, in one sense, is a great big mall). Head for the big department stores or places on the main boulevards and most of the stuff will be made in China and equally available (and cheaper) in Des Moines. Of course there are the big names of fashion in Paris and if you want to buy there you'll get fabulous stuff at fabulously high prices ( I bought my wife a scarf at Hermes in April that cost 280 euros and that was one of the cheaper ones). If you really want to get a feel for life in Paris then plunk yourself down in a small rental apartment (there are dozens of websites that have short term tourist rentals) and find the local baker, cheese shop, wine shop etc. Pick our a local cafe. Patronize all these places regularly. Greet people when you enter with a friendly "Bonjour" and remember to say "au revoir" when you exit. Within a few days the proprietor or waiter will begin to recognize you. If you know how to behave (don't be loud or aggressive, say please (s'il vous plait) and thank you (merci) at every opportunity, don't constantly be in a rush) you'll soon be a "regular." When the waiter or sales girl greets you as you enter the cafe or boulangerie, gives you a smile and asks "Comme habitude?" (the usual?) you''ll know you're part of the life of the neighborhood. When you realize you can be happy just sitting nursing a glass of wine at your cafe and watching the world go by then you'll know the best part of being a Parisian.

I'm pregnant and don't want to be?
I'm not even 20 yet and I just found out I am 18 weeks pregnant. I'm living in Paris for the year while I'm studying abroad for my fashion degree. The baby's father was just a one night stand and I'm actually really not sure who the father is. I have a boyfriend back in the States and he'll know that it's not his. I don't want to get rid of the baby, but I'm just like freaking out because I don't know what to do. Help please!
Answer: only couple of things you can do. Give the baby up for adoption in Paris, or keep the baby and face life. Or, you can abort the baby, but you said you didn't want to do that. Maybe you should talk to your family about it.
