The film is set in ancient Egypt under Roman rule, where violent religious upheaval in the streets of Alexandria spills over into the city’s famous Library. Trapped inside its walls, the brilliant and beautiful astronomer Hypatia (Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardener) and her disciples fight to save the wisdom of the Ancient World. Among these disciples are two men competing for her heart: the witty, privileged Orestes (Oscar Isaac) and Davus (Max Minghella), Hypatia’s young slave, who is torn between his secret love for her and the freedom he knows can be his if he chooses to join the unstoppable surge of the Christians. Chilean-born Spanish director Alejandro Amenábar’s career has been truly meteoric, gaining international prestige with every film. His second film Open your Eyes, was a huge box office hit in Spain and was released worldwide, later remade as Vanilla Sky, starring Tom Cruise, Penélope Cruz and Cameron Diaz. The Others, starring Nicole Kidman, was his first English language film, and a critical and audience success. The Sea Inside, starring Javier Bardem, won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film as well as 58 other international film awards. “Four years ago, after The Sea Inside, which was such an intimate experience for me, I would never have imagined that my next film would be about Romans and Christians in Ancient Egypt. But that’s the beauty of this profession: you can let your curiosity run free and explore worlds as fascinating as 4th century Alexandria; imagine its streets, temples and people. And find the passion – and the money – to bring it all to life.” - Alejandro Amenábar “Hypatia, the brilliant, beauteous, avowedly virginal fourth-century philosopher, mathematician, astronomer… Weisz is an excellent Hypatia.” – David Edelstein, New York Magazine “It's a fascinating film, crammed with both stirring visual images and intellectual ideas…. A great example of bravura filmmaking by a gifted young international filmmaker.” – Patrick Goldstein, Los Angeles Times “Mr. Amenábar, working from an insightful script that he wrote with Mateo Gil, focuses on two moments when the ancient culture war reached a fever pitch and shows that no group is entirely innocent of violence and intolerance.” – A.O. Scott, New York Times “A visually imposing, high-minded epic.” – Todd McCarthy, Variety The film’s running time is 126 minutes; it is not rated.

I am including the plots, so even if you haven't seen it, you can still help.I am looking for movies that you would recommend someone who enjoyed these movies. Not just the latest award winner, or a list of top 200 or whatever to see in life.Recommendations that make you say "you liked that movie, you will like this movie) 1.Series 7: The Contenders (Thriller) Meet some real survivors! In the near future, six average citizens are chosen by random lottery to kill each other for the viewing enjoyment of millions. The game continues until one survivor is left standing. A cutting-edge satire from tabloid TV producer Daniel Minihan, The Contenders is a wry statement on the cultural void engendered by the boob tube. 2.Rounders (Drama) Fueled by his penchant for high-stakes gambling, law student Mike McDermott (Matt Damon) befriends and "befoes" a fellow gambling addict named Worm (Edward Norton) and club owner Teddy KGB (John Malkovich). But tensions run high when Worm and Mike have only five days to come up with $15K. Gretchen Mol co-stars in this John Dahl-directed drama, whose superb cast and well-developed characters made Rounders a hit on the festival circuit. 3.Joy Ride (Thriller) It's all fun and games when two brothers (Paul Walker and Steve Zahn) take off on a cross-country road trip to bring home a pretty college friend (Leelee Sobieski). But the jokes end when a prank backfires and they find themselves stalked by a vengeful trucker. It soon becomes clear that the relentless psycho won't give up his chase until somebody pays with their life. John Dahl (Rounders) directs this twist on Steven Spielberg's Duel. 4.Home Room (Drama) A small town is rocked by a shooting at its high school that results in nine deaths and serious injury to one popular female student, Deanna (Erika Christensen). As a detective (Victor Garber) looks for those responsible, his concentration turns to a defiant outcast named Alicia (Busy Phillips). With her involvement still in question, Alicia visits Deanna in the hospital, and the two forge a rare bond over what they saw that fateful day. 5.Pieces of April (Comedy) Reformed wild child April Burns (Katie Holmes) attempts to make Thanksgiving dinner -- while battling a temperamental oven -- for her estranged suburban family at her grungy New York apartment and anticipates introducing them to her new boyfriend, Bobby (Derek Luke). Conceived during the 2008 Hollywood writers' strike, Joss Whedon's quirky musical comedy originally debuted as an online miniseries. 7. Daria: The Movie: Is it Fall Yet? (Television) Serving as a bridge between the animated MTV show's fourth and fifth season, this full-length feature follows the droll, sardonic title character through the summer before her senior year of high school. While she serves as a counselor at a sad day camp, Daria is torn between loyalty for her best friend, Jane, and a relationship she's building with Jane's ex-boyfriend. Meanwhile, Daria's vapid sister, Quinn, tries to prove she's not dumb. 8.The Lucky Ones (Drama) Three soldiers injured in the Iraq War return to native soil, only to find that their tour of duty has taken its toll on the home front. While Colee seeks to repay her dead boyfriend's family, Cheaver dreams of a big win in LasVegas, and T.K. tries to regain his confidence. 9.Misery (Thriller) Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates) rescues her idol, romance novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan), after he crashes his car during a fierce blizzard. But when she finds out he plans to kill off the heroine in his next volume, Annie morphs from nurturing caregiver to sadistic jailer. What are your thoughts on the Oscars?
Any surprises? Did you agree with the winners? Who got "robbed"? This is your chance to vent or praise... be as descriptive as you like!
Answer: It was OK. Unfortunately, Jon Stewart can't really get his full swing in a environment such as Oscars. You can't be brutally funny and make fun at people that are in the audience while all of that is being seen live across the world. No Country for Old Men really deserved those Oscars. Excellent movie. Javier Bardem truly set new standards for movie villains. Unlike Hanibal who you just can't not to think of as a nice gentleman even when he eats people, Bardem's Chigurh gives you the chills all the time. Superb performance. Daniel Day-Lewis was a no brainer for best actor - sorry for the other guys but he just IS far better. He becomes the role he plays. I was a bit off on the actresses part - I was expecting a more popular vote for Ellen Page, though I personally thought that both Cate Blanchett and Marion Cotillard were MUCH better. Tilda Swinton was my second choice for best supporting actress. Now, Golden Compass beating what is essentially a special effect movie, the Transformers, to the special effects Oscar was just plain... weird. I mean.. come on... Its a movie about giant robots from outer space that transform into cars and airplanes. How can THAT be beaten by a talking bear? Let me say that again. GIANT. ROBOTS. FROM OUTER SPACE. THAT TRANSFORM INTO CARS AND AIRPLANES. If there were no special effects there wouldn't be this movie. Period. Also, Persepolis SHOULD have gotten that Oscar, but I guess animation is still ONLY for kids - so let us once again give the Oscar to the talking rat. Oh, and I laughed out loud (no, really... I did) when I saw Enchanted NOT getting that "singing" Oscar. With three nominations, one of those annoying songs SHOULD have won. Thankfully, a far better movie did get it instead. I could almost forgive the talking rats for that. But not the Transformers. Prime should have gotten that one.
Who got the Oscars instead of....?
Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie in Carrie for best actress in a leading role, and best in a supporting role respectively? And what film did the winners win the Oscars for?
Answer: Beatrice Strait (who? lol) won Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in 'Network', which also gave the Oscar for Best Actress to Faye Dunaway, for the same movie. :)

Who's a better actress?
As far a being believable... Anna Paquin (True Blood) or Kristin Stewart (Twilight) Anna Paquin Oscar winner @ 11 years old for the Piano Kristin Stewart bafta's rising star award I got my pick how bout you? Maybe the two aren't good when it comes to vampire stuff. But there difference is Stewart does her portrayal in a film and Paquin is in a TV series which can be harder in my opinion . I love her a Rouge and Stewart was watchable in Catch that Kid. I've never seen Speak but that's only one film.
Answer: Anna Paquin is great in True Blood. I don't know how they figured she'd be good to play Sookie but she is perfect for the part. I hate to say it but Kristin Stewart's acting is stiff and boring. I know many ppl like the Twilight series and I am one of them but Stewart is not a good actress for the part. Sorry Twilight fanatics. Anyone who says Kristen is a Twilight fan and probably like it over True Blood.
