We explore fiction, nonfiction, plays, and memoirs with a queer theme written by women. Send your suggestions for future reads to Heidi at [masked]. THE CURRENT AUTHOR AND BOOK: Naked in the Promised Land: A Memoir by Lillian Faderman While Faderman is well known as the foremother of gay and lesbian studies, few would suspect she was the illegitimate child of a guilt-obsessed single mother, that she tried to please her mom by becoming a movie star or that she worked her way through college as a pin-up girl. Faderman's mother and aunt left Latvia in 1923 to work in New York and send back money to their family. They did, but neither could save their loved ones from Hitler's Holocaust, which tormented Faderman's mother endlessly. Mother and daughter moved to Los Angeles, where they supported each other's fragile mental health with a single dream: Lillian could become a movie star. She took acting classes, suffered various crushes and even endured advances by her mother's suitors, all in a blind stumble to find herself, or at least to escape the burden of her mother's unhappiness. While a guidance counselor steered Lillian back to school, she still had to fumble her own way to a sexual identity. Pre-liberation, this meant cop hassles, job paranoia and fake marriages to gay men, as well as the usual broken hearts. Still, by the end, Faderman became a bigwig at Cal State, with a baby and a lover and a gay studies program. Exceedingly honest, endearing and profound, Faderman truly shows readers the distance she's traveled, from "little momzer" to esteemed academic. Mother Daughter Lesbian questions & answers
I am bisexual. And very comfortable with this fact. But recently I have wondered what would happen if I ever had a child while i was with another woman (through adoption or artificial insemination). I have always wanted a child and never before thought anything might hinder that. But if I had a child, would it be taken away from me simply if I was involved with another woman? I don't believe that a child can't grow up fine without both a dad and mom because if that was true all the children from divorced families or single mothers would have turned out strange as well. But would my opinion matter? A son or daughter would always be top priority to me and if my being involved with a woman would prevent me from ever having one, then I would ignore my lesbian side and only focus on the straight. But I would still prefer to be able to choose for myself it I can. Please don't criticize me for being a bisexual. Harsh words just for the sake of harsh words are not welcomed or wanted. ^_^
Answer: Your child cannot be taken away from you in any developed countries simply because you are in a lesbian relationship. Some places will not allow you to adopt, but if you were to adopt somewhere that does allow it and then move somewhere that does not, they cannot take your child from you.
How are Gay fathers towards their daughters and Lesbian Mothers towards their sons ?
No offense, just a curious question.
Answer: I had two sons so never had the situation you ask about Peter P&P :-)
What to do about father daughter dance & parents dance?
Neither of us have fathers that are attending the wedding. So no father daughter dance, can he still have a mother son dance? And my FH mother is a lesbian, so when we do the parent dance do I dance with her girlfriend? I don't want to give it all up, but I also don't want to look tacky... HELP
Answer: Yes, there's no reason for him to miss out on his mother/son dance. You can certainly opt to dance with her girlfriend, but I don't think it's necessary. If you wanted to dance with someone, I would choose your mother, or you could opt to skip that part. Everyone knows that your fathers are deceased (if that is the case), so they won't miss it. You could also put up a photo montage of each of you with your respective dads during that time on a screen. Congratulations and good luck. :)

Readers/Writers: Do you think this part of my novel is funny?
As soon as he entered the church, he noticed Leslie standing alone by the pews, a Bible in her hands. He scowled, shoving his hands further into his pockets. The psychotic man-woman, or so he and his brother liked to call her, made his life a living hell when he was a child. She had told on him when he and Chris stuck a packet of Skittles in the microwave and when they tied their mother's favorite laced bra to a balloon and let it fly away. Plus, she had pushed him down the stairs when he was nine, but every time he told his father, he wouldn't believe him. Whenever he saw her, he immediately thought back to those times in his childhood and, once again, vowed to get revenge on her. Zach began to walk over to her, carefully maneuvering himself past the crowd of people. He was still on a look out for Uncle Mark. If that crazy bastard came anywhere near him, he would call the cops. Leslie looked over and saw him, but all she did was give the same, evil grin she used to give him when he was little. Why did his father have to marry a nutcase and why did she have to have a daughter that was even crazier than her? "Reilly," she started. "I didn't think you'd actually show up. Chris said you've been having some mental problems. Are all of the one-night stands and nobody loving you back starting to get to you?" What the hell? He sneered and let out a small, pity laugh. She had tried to be humorous when they were younger and he was just getting into comedy, but she was never successful. For nine years, he endured hours of trying to convince her that she wasn't funny, but he had always failed. "I'll just take this from you," he said as he took the Bible from her hands. "I know how contact with Holy stuff makes your skin burn." Zach smiled as she flipped him the bird and stormed off like a prima donna, even though she was far from that. "Work it, Lesbetron," he muttered as he watched her hips shake. He twisted his face in disgust and just walked away from that scene, counting each step he took until he finally saw his sister. -- Just so you know, Zach is a generally nice guy, but he strongly dislikes Leslie because of what she did to him in their childhood. * "Lesbetron" has nothing to do with Leslie being a lesbian, which she isn't even one. It's just a nickname that Zach and his brother gave her when she was a kid. * Zach had a run-in with his Uncle Mark a few chapters before this part, so I wanted to mention it so his role in the story doesn't die out. I don't care if you don't think it's funny, but please tell me why it isn't and how I can fix it to make it better. I know that it isn't going to be humorous to everyone, but I am hoping that at least a few people will get a little chuckle out of it. Do you think this part of my story is funny? If not, then why and how can I make it funny? Thanks! I really appreciate it!
Answer: It wasn't funny because I didn't think you were trying to be funny. Your tone sounds aggravated. The narrator person talks like Zach so I don't know if it's Zach or an outside voice. Anyways. it's not funny because Zach doesn't think it is and the tone is negative.
What is the name of this movie?
these are the details i remember about the movie: There's this crazy mother who had sex with this drunk and the drunk guy left her. she gives birth to a daughter and is abusive to her throughout her life. the mother hates this other lesbian woman who has a nephew who works as a barber. the mother tries to get in a relationship with this barber while he cuts her hair at the barbershop he works in. the daughter grows up and still hates the mother. the daughter catches the mother in bed with the barber guy and he flashes her and invites her to suck it. she is disgusted. the barber guy was using scissors and a broom handle to penetrate the mother. the daughter tries to find her biological father but finds he is a drunk lowlife. he tries to rape her but she kills him. she then joins the hare krishna or something. the barber gets angry and leaves the mother after some arguments. the barber's aunt gets upset and throws acid at the mother disfiguring her face. the mother gets revenge by trapping the aunt in a cage and two people cut off her hand and the daughter comes later and frees her and she gets this claw to replace the hand. the mother and the two people prepare to set up some show or something. the daughter gets killed by the mother and so are many in the audience. the aunt gets revenge. later teh mother is in jail with some girl beside her as she awaits the electric chair. she dies in the end still believing she is all great and stuff. Note: This movie is NC-17 Thanks!.
Answer: It sounds a lot like "Female Trouble" (1974). "The life and times of Dawn Davenport, showing her progress from loving schoolgirl to crazed mass murderer - all of which stems from her parents' refusal to buy her cha-cha heels for Christmas. She runs away from home, is raped, becomes a single mother, criminal and glamorous model before her inevitable rendezvous with the electric chair."
What are your thoughts on this article?
I understand that sexuality can be, and is indeed, fluid for many (not all) people. But, I find her tone in this lengthy piece to entirely frustrating and irritating. Just curious to hear your take on it. . . . ** How I went from committed lesbian to a happily married mother of four ** http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1289652/How-I-went-committed-lesbian-happily-married-mother-four.html#ixzz0ryL022RL "Today, with five-year-old triplets, Thady, Frank and Orla, and a seven-year-old daughter, Saoirse, a husband and a home in a leafy London suburb, I could be viewed as the archehtypal wife and mother... But through my 20s and 30s, I cut a very different figure altogether: I was a lesbian. So, what turns a woman like me straight? Did I simply cave in to conventionality later in life? Was my biological clock too deafening to ignore the desire for a child? Do some women simply play at lesbianism because it appears cool? Or are some gay women much more flexible about who they fall in love with? These were certainly the questions on many people's lips this week, when it was revealed that Cabinet Minister Chris Huhne's mistress, Carina Trimingham, had dropped her female partner of a number of years in favour of a man." @Lancelot: Precisely! @Hazel: I am not the author of the above article.
Answer: It's called Bisexual you stupid little women! You do not "Turn Straight", your evidently bi. Either that or some hypocritical straight women who wants to give the LGBT some more crap! First of all the "Was my biological clock too deafening to ignore the desire for a child" doesn't work because guess what even when your a lesbian YOU CAN STILL HAVE KIDS! Of course a minister is involved so this is probably complete crap or brain washing. Chris Huhne you are a disgrace of a human being! Go get a life.
what would you do If he wanted to take your 3 year old?
would you let your little 3 1/2 year old daughter go every other weekend with a violent, cocaine using felon? And to add to it she doesn't even know him has no baby bond with him. And to add to it you(me) don't know him or his family and the people he is around? And find out that his last offense was in late 08 felonious assault with a dangerous weapon. He also has another daughter 1 month older that he gave up for adoption. And a son by another mother. this is my current situation. I was foolish and had a one night stand. But it resulted in the greatest blessing of my life.(my baby). So after almost 4 years and he decides he want to take her away so she can stay every other weekend with him away from me. My mentally ill mother is behind this, she hunted him down after she found out that I was in a lesbian relationship. And I no longer let her see Jazmyn-rose due to the fact that she was dating a child rapist(a man who raped his own daughter at 5,did 25 years for it) My father is a child rapist too. I guess she has a taste for sick men. What would you do? fight him in court like I am?
Answer: If you fight him in court, you will when, no question. However, that means years of court fights and a lot of money. You could move with no forwarding address to your mother or him, it might be best, but it certainly wouldn't be easy. You could try to get a restraining order but that leads right back to the courts again.
Mississippistan lesbian honor student removed from school yearbook. Why do atheists care what others believe?
When Veronica Rodriguez opened Wesson Attendance Center's Yearbook on Friday, she didn't find a trace of her lesbian daughter Ceara Sturgis after a long battle with school officials to include a photo of her daughter wearing a tuxedo in the school's 2010 yearbook. "They didn't even put her name in it," Sturgis' mother Veronica Rodriguez said. "I was so furious when she told me about it. Ceara started crying and I told her to suck it up. Is that not pathetic for them to do that? Yet again, they have crapped on her and made her feel alienated." http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2010/04/27/mississippi-goddamn-high-school-erases-lesbian-student-from-yearbook
Answer: Human rights is a secular concept.
I think I've fallen in love and it's so dangerous?
I'm a straight married mother and have been friends with one half of a lesbian couple for three years (our daughters attend the same school) For the last few months, we have been spending more and more time together alone, mainly coffees after school drop-off and also at her house as she lives close to the school. We have become best friends I suppose, but she makes my heart flutter. I'm so aware of her and if we touch by accident I blush. What's going on? I'm 45 for goodness sake (she's 42) She shares her secrets and her woes with me and gazes at me with her big brown eyes. Does she know the effect she's having? Is she flirting or playing with me? I'm not sure what you can tell me that would help, but I feel so alone in my confusion and lust. I can't discuss this with anyone I know for obvious reasons, so just sharing this anonymously is helping. I know she's unhappy in her relationship, but I'm fine in mine, or at least I think I am. I have regular s*x with my husband, but I fantasize about her at the obvious moments! LOL. What can I do apart from take a cold shower? I will be seeing her twice a day for the next 6 years at school.
Answer: for both family's involved, do not act on it ive seen whats happened in situations like these and people will get hurt no matter what and you will end up regretting it, just be happy with what you have, ignore these feelings and try and control yourself a bit, don't get involved in their relationship even if she is unhappy, all couples go through tough times. You will have crushes you just have to get on with life though sometimes, unfortunately your not all in high school still.
