"Forgotten Gateway: Coming to America Through Galveston Island"Location: Moody Gardens1 Hope Blvd.Galveston, TX Description: The traveling exhibit "Forgotten Gateway" chronicles the Port of Galveston’s largely forgotten history as a major gateway to American immigration from 1845 to 1924. "Forgotten Gateway" builds on a growing scholarly and public interest in the history of migration patterns to America and Galveston’s place as one of the nation’s top immigrant ports in that history. This exhibit is the first of its kind to explore Galveston’s legacy as a port of entry on a national scale. It will bring to light the little-known yet rich era of Galveston’s history and just how important it was to the growth of Texas and the American Midwest.Long before Ellis Island processed its first immigrant, Galveston was a port of entry for hundreds of thousands of immigrants. While the New York counterpart made it a natural port for Europeans, Galveston attracted a diverse group of people from Europe, Mexico, South and Central America and even Asia. In addition, before the Civil War, it was a major port for forced migration – the sale and transport of slaves from Africa and other points in the United States to Texas. The exhibit highlights enduring humanities themes in the history of immigration including: the dangers of the journey; making a life in a new land; navigating bureaucracy; confronting discrimination; and becoming “American.” These trials and tribulations are illuminated through personal stories, dynamic visitor interactive kiosks, engaging media pieces, and more than 200 original artifacts and documents. The exhibit originated from a comment a 10th-grader made on a heritage trip to Ellis Island. “Why do we need to go to New York,” asked the student. “My grandparents came through Galveston.”

Answer: Yea, it's over. She may be nominated for a spin of party, but no serious consideration. It never really would of went anywhere anyways.
Honorable (Questionable) Susan R. Bolton blocked most of the AZ immigration law?
What do you think ? More Proof of Federal Govt not caring about the will of the people and States Rights , Or a Political Play ? Or was the Laws un Constitutional . Jon J : Did you know that the INS refuses to come get and or house and or Deport Illegals caught by Law Enforcement Personnel while doing their legal jobs ie; Criminal Arrest DUI Stops .
Answer: All the States of this Union and the People better pray that when this lands in the SCOTUS, that they will be true to the Constitution and side with Arizona. Their sworn duty is to uphold the Constitution as it was written for the States. To Wit: Constitution For The United States. Otherwise it should be disbanded and return to independent States such as "The Republic of Texas"
Did Arizona lose the lawsuit?
say it ain't so. i am all for arizona's illegal immigration law.
Answer: NO , some parts of the law are not enforceable and some are , the Gov of AZ is going to file an appeal .
Did you guys know that Judge Bolton block parts of Arizona immigration law?
http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-arizona-immigration-20100729,0,3891996.story OMG seriously what is your reaction to this? Can anybody tell me what parts did Arizona block? What is Arizona governor going to do now? NO BS and short Answers. Stay on topic please. Illegals are already draining this country hard. This is why I live in Canada with my mom and dad right now to get away with all this. I have both dual American and Canadian citizenship btw. Come on Oklahoma law had an effect in 07 and never had any problems like this before. What is your opinion on this?
Answer: immigrants cannot be required by law to carry immigration papers. and police cannot require proof of legality when being stopped for committing or suspected of committing a crime . and local police cannot enforce the federal law by arresting some one for being here illegally.(apparently states are not allowed to have the same laws the federal government has)_ that is strictly for the feds to do. and of course we know how well they do it. citizens of United States views, opinions, safety and desires.and rights to protection have just taken a back seat to voting blocks and our the direction of this administration as well as the opinions and desires of the mexican government
If sb1070 immigration law is a mirror of a federal law, as their proponents said, then why a judge ruled?
against it? Any parts that are not a mirror of the federal law? and Are the people who applauded that law, really read the law or they were just repeating the same chant like the gove of Arizona because they thought that was their best excuse? Then, if they read the law, again, why they said it was a mirror of the federal law? It was or not a mirror of a federal law, yes or no? Do the gove of Arizona lied to the USA citizens saying the law was a mirror of an existing federal law? And who believed it? Thanks, Have a wonderful evening Please, don't post hate Resemblance and Mirror of the law, are not the same and they always said it was a mirror
Answer: Because it's not a mirror. For one thing, federal law does not mandate that police officers demand proof of citizenship from everyone they stop who "might" be illegal. In fact, federal law does not mandate/permit police officers from enforcing immigration law AT ALL, the only exception being if they have gone through the month-long ICE training.
Is it better for the gove of Arizona to cooperate with president Obama on an immigration reform than to?
continue a lost battle on the sb1070 most likely because she wants to promote herself? Thank you Please, no hate. Gob bless you.
Answer: Yes, why can't we all just get along? There's no way Brewer is going to do any such thing ahead of her election, and no way the Republican Party would allow it. this is their issue this year to stir the base and get folks out to vote in November elections. As for Brewer herself, until she signed this bill, almost no one knew who she was and those that did didn't think much of her, so you can be sure she'll cling to this fight as long as she can. It's very unlikely that the bill will survive contact with the 9th Circuit Court, which is the most liberal and eccentric of all of the circuit courts. so, it will wind up before the Supreme Court, where the stakes are doubled and anything can happen.
Do you find SB1070 to be racial profiling or a matter of illegal immigration?
I bring this up only because I've heard so many people argue this by calling it racial profiling so I wanted your views on it.
Answer: Now AZ and the other states should pass laws that require hard proof of Constitutional qualification for all presidential candidates on the ballot for 2012. Oh wouldn't it be absolutely delicious for some reporter to ask the "Constitutional Scholar" Obama, "Mr. President, some Arizona supporters are raising the arguments of Alexander Hamilton in Federalist 27 to show that Arizona is operating completely within the rights of the states as envisioned by the founding fathers. Would you care to rebut that argument?" Can you imagine oblama answering this without his teleprompter?? This ruling today will just bring more full invasion of illegals, terrorists and paramilitary drug cartels. The blood of murdered American citizen and AZ rancher Rob Krentz is on the hands of this liberal judge, obama, and Holder, along with all the other anti American haters. Send them the CLEAR message this November and again in 2012 that we aren't going to take this anymore. American citizens have had it!
If the Federal Government will not force illigal imigration?
If the Federal Government will not in force illegal immigration what is Arizona to do? I live in Texas it is not in forced here either. They do in force it in Mexico if we tried to go there. I have no problem with legal immigration. So what is the answer?
Answer: Vote for the candidate who pledges to enforce the law in 2012, and hold their feet to the fire. It's a lost cause (except for the court of appeals and then supreme court rulings which could take years) with the current list of dying, to old, ego driven, career minded slugs currently occupying office space we pay for. Keep your attention focused and be patient.
How do you feel about States' Rights?
Today, a court ruling said that the state of Arizona doesn't have the right to enforce immigration law in its state how it chooses because the federal government "already does that". Many states have laws on the books that would make abortion illegal but are superseded by a federal court ruling. In the health care legislation, Nebraska was given a concession putting more of a burden on other states to pick up the slack. I love the United States. I have lived in California, Mississippi, Texas, Utah, and Washington. I have seen the most liberals area of the country and the most conservative. I can't imagine it as an intended consequence that liberal activism in California would impose itself on conservatives in Utah or vice versa. We would be far better off if we could move to a portion of the country that more closely resembled our values and beliefs. Is it time for states to start insisting on their rights and ignore federal law and federal court rulings? Dobberx, Keep getting your liberal talking points. The fact of the matter is that Arizona makes no new law. They outline enforcement. To all, Forgetting the AZ immigration law, look around for yourself. Federal government is becoming more and more overbearing. I believe in subsidiarity. Look it up. Sgold, Right you are. I don't want states to secede. I just want the federal government to relinquish most of it's power to local levels and follow the constitution. However, I can see the future of this country and it is bleak if we continue down this path. I would rather live in a free society in a seceded state than be an oldthinker unbellyfeeling USSOC.
Answer: Federal Law SHOULD be over State law, BUT(and here's the rub to me) States should be allowed to enforce laws that don't stop the Feds from doing their jobs. OK why is it legal for a State to outlaw drugs? The Feds already have the DEA to do that. I said it before and I'll say it again, if I was Arizona I would decriminalize drugs and say that it's up to the DEA to take care of the problem. As to my opinion on State's Rights we already tried to fix the issue of an overbearing Federal Govt 150 years ago, it didn't work.
Do the developed nations need immigration from poorer countries to survive?
Do you think japan, taiwan, and south korea's strong stances against immigration is going to hurt them in the years to come or is it already hurting them? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59tvl6mJGrQ without immigration, the developed nations' population ages and that leads to a larger retired population than the working population
Answer: Developed nations do not need immigrants to survive, but developed countries that need immigrants to do unskilled service jobs and agricultural jobs will need them to prosper. Due to lack of arable land, Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea will have trouble feeding their own populations for the foreseeable future let alone exporting agricultural products. These countries need to focus instead on information technology, value added manufacturing, and intellectual property development rather than natural resource exploitation. China and India will also have trouble feeding their enormous populations. In comparison, the U.S. will continue to be the world's bread basket for the foreseeable future. Cheap, exploitable farm workers are needed for profitable agricultural export.
