George Miller Comedian

Since most people in entertainment are liberals, liberals have a lot of options. Comedians - Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher, Sarah Silverman, David Letterman, George Carlin, pretty much every black comedian, etc. Music - Too many to name, Streisand and the Dixie Chicks are most hated by Conservatives but we also have the Beatles, Radiohead, Green Day, pretty much every hip hop artist, etc. It always strikes me that the conservative musicians and comedians are of inferior quality. Dennis Miller or Larry the Cable Guy or Andrew Dice Clay just aren't very funny, but maybe that's just because I'm a liberal? And maybe I don't like the music because I'm not into country (Ted Nugent has a few songs I like though)? So I'm really curious Liberals and Conservatives, who are your favorite musicians and comedians that share your political beliefs? Are there any whose entertainment you enjoy but whose politics you disagree with?

Answer: Libertarian George Carlin, because he was honest. I don't think he was a liberal though. He despised both sides and the whole process they created, I thought. Ted Nugent, because we agree on a lot of things. Authors, you left out a big segment of the entertainment market there. Ken Kesey, Hunter S Thompson, Bill Burroughs, Thomas Paine, Robert Pirsig, Sun Tzu, are all on my bookshelf. Quite the eclectic mix, I know. As for entertainment I enjoy, and politics I disagree with...pretty much all of Hollywood and music. I love Pearl Jam, till Eddie Vedder starts running his mouth. Same for Cameron Diaz. Thankfully, I've not heard Les Claypool say much about politics. George Clooney, Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon, Michael Moore...well I just plain don't like any of them. They were not that talented to begin with, and their politics drowns what little talent they do have.

Answer: Here are what I would consider some of the top books on that list based on my personal taste and how I perceive their literary merit: Waiting for Godot - Samuel Beckett (One of the most iconic American plays ever written, an absurdist work about two men who are waiting for someone that never comes) Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte (Like I said, I hate the genre. But if you like Victorian literature then Jane Eyre is not horrible. About some flawed girl that meets a dark brooding flawed guy and they fall in love. Yuck) Childhood's End - Arthur C. Clarke (Solid Scifi book, bunch of aliens come to earth and "help" humans; future evolution of the human race) 2001: A Space Odyssey - Arthur C. Clarke (One of the best known scifi novels of all time, a monolith appears on the moon and a bunch of scientists try to figure out what the hell it is) Heart of Darkness - Joseph Conrad (Very famous account of Africa as told by some white european dude) Anything listed by Charles Dickens (Hugely famous author, Bleak House and Great Expectations are both long commentaries on the London class structure, Tale of Two Cities is a slightly shorter commentary on London class structure) Lord of the Flies - William Golding (A bunch of kids are stranded, do pretty well for a while, and then start to go insane and revert to animalistic tendencies. Hugely famous and influential when it came out) Brave New World - Aldous Huxley (Futuristic/dystopian/scifi literature about a society revolving around reproductive technology and widespread recreational sex (craziness. also nested parentheses) commonly banned book, very good) Finnegan's Wake - James Joyce (Wait, was this list provided by the school? What kind of Sadistic teacher slipped this one in? Seriously, do not attempt this one. Often considered one of the most difficult books written in the english language. I am absolutely not kidding you when I tell you not to try it for school. Don't be a hero. Try reading it over a summer. Better yet, try reading it over every summer) Portrait of the Artist as a Young man - James Joyce (This is more like it. Joyce is one of the leading figures in modernist literature, and Portrait of the Artist is one of his more accessible novels. I recommend it) Paradise Lost - John Milton (Very long, but very good. It's about Satan's epic battle with god, and then his epic fall from heaven. It's epic) Utopia - Thomas More (It's about a bunch of socialists on an island that have totally figured this whole "society" thing out. Historically significant as being one of the first books about a societal Utopia; literature-wise not too exciting) 1984 - George Orwell (THE dystopian novel. Fantastic writer, fantastic writing, fantastic plot, about an extreme police state and its power to break down a man piece by tortured piece. Love it) Gulliver's Travels - Jonathan Swift (Some people like it, not a fan myself. About a dude named gulliver and his travels to magical and far away places. Eh.) The Time Machine - HG Wells (Considered to be the father of modern science fiction. Very famous, pretty good. A guy builds a time machine and goes into the future only to find that a two class system has yielded two separate evolved forms of humanity) War of the Worlds - HG Wells (You've probably seen the movie. It's nothing like that. It's much better. If you're going to read Wells, though, read Time Machine) Well there you go. Probably much more in depth than you wanted, but it's what I do. I like lists.

Answer: At the beginning of SNL every week there is a "From The White House" skit. They're pretty funny. Around the election time there were a lot of funny skits on Saturday Night Live, they are on Hulu now! :)
